Task: You have a child in your class with Attention Deficit Disorder.

(i) What are some of the observable indicators that you will notice from such a learner?

Attention Deficit Disorder is an outdated term for what experts now call Attention Deficit
Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is chronic neurological disorder that causes a range of
behaviour problems such as difficulties in following instructions, focusing on school work,
completing a task etc.

 Attention (concentration on things).


 Deficit (failing short).
 Hyperactive (abnormally or extremely active).
 Disorder (state of confusion or disorder).

This disorder is genetically inherited meaning it runs through families and scientists have
further discovered other possible causes which includes:

 Brain injury
 Premature delivery
 Low birthweight.
 Alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy.

Observable indicators: Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) show the
following symptoms.

 They are inattentive (unable to keep focus).


 Hyperactive (excessive movements that is not fit to a setting such as fidgeting).
 They are easily distracted ( small noise can shift their attention and focus).
 Difficulties in organizing or completing a task.
 Difficulties in processing a task as learners of the same age group.
 Excessive talking.
(ii) Discuss some of the teaching/ learning strategies you can use for such a learner, bearing
in mind that these strategies benefits all the learners in class too.
 Use individualized method of teaching.
 Use question and answer method of teaching by randomly pointing at learners.
 Use of video and audio clips when teaching.
 Be slow and use attention capturing stories when introducing a lesson.
 Reinforce learning by using real life examples.
 Incorporate more physical activities.
