MATTER: Solid,
Liquids &
Gases
By Miss Santi M. N., S.Pd.
What is “Matter”?

Matter is any substance (include both

living things and non living things)that
has mass and occupies space
Manual mass
Matter has mass balance

Mass is the amount of matter in an object

Unit of mass : kilograms(Kg) and grams(gr)

1 kg=1000 gr

Measuring instrument : mass balance

Digital mass
balance
Matter occupies
space
The amount of space
occupied by matter is
known as volume
There are four
Measuring tools:

Erlenmeyer flask

Beaker
measuring
cylinder
Learn Measurement of Volume
in 2 minutes. (toppr.com)
Displacement
method
Measure the
volume of a liquid
Use a beaker or measuring cylinder

The volume of the liquid in

this measuring cylinder is 43
ml
The volume of the liquid in this
beaker is 180 ml
Experiment at Home
Experiment at Home
Measuring the volume of an irregularly
shaped object (example: plasticine)

1. Enter the water into a measuring

cylinder
2. The volume of water = 30 ml
3. Enter the object into the water
4. Total volume of water and object =
40 ml
5. The volume of object = Total volume of
water and object - volume of water =
40 ml- 30 ml = 10 ml
Measure the volume of object use
Displacement Method
1. Put the water into the overflow can
until it’s full
2. Put object X into the water
3. Water spills to the measuring cylinder
4. The amount of water collected in the
measuring cylinder represent the
volume of object X
5. The volume of object = the volume of
water that spilled
Solids, Liquids, Gases
Solids The properties of solids
include:
1. Solids stay in one place and can be
held.
2. Solids keep their shape.
3. They do not flow like liquids.
4. Solids always take up the same Even though they can be poured, sugar,
amount of space. salt and flour are all solids. Each particle of
5. They do not spread out like gases. salt, for example, keeps the same shape
and volume.
6. Solids can be cut or shaped.
The properties of liquids include:
1. Liquids can flow or be poured
easily. They are not easy to hold.
2. Liquids change their shape
depending on the container they
are in.
3. Even when liquids change their
shape, they always take up the
same amount of space. Their
volume stays the same (has
definite volume).
The properties of gases include:
1. Gases are often invisible.
2. Gases do not have a fixed
shape. They spread out and
change their shape and volume
to fill up whatever container
they are in.
3. Gases can be squashed.

Non-matter is anything
that do not have mass or
occupy space

Examples: light , heat,

music or sound from
headphones
Summary-Matter and Non Matter
What is a matter made of?
Matter can exist in 3 forms:
● Matter is made up
of very tiny particles
(atoms)

● Particle(atom) is
the smallest unit of
matter
particle
The arrangement of solids, liquids and gasses particles

Solids particles Liquids particles Gasses particles

• The particles are closely • The particles are loosely packed • The particles are very loosely
packed • The particles are not arrange in a packed
• The particle are arranged in a regular pattern • The particles are far apart
regular pattern • particles can move freely than • The particles can move freely
• the solids particles can not solid particles and making gases flow easily
move freely • The liquid particles can slide past
• Particles only vibrate in the one another that cause a liquid
place can flow
Why the smell of fart can spreads
quickly in the room?

=> because fart is gases,

and the arrangement gases
particle very loosely packed
and far apart so the particles
can move freely and flow
easily so the gases particle
can spreads quickly in the
room
why the smell of perfume in liquid form can
spread quickly in the room?

When liquids perfume is

exposed to the surroundings,
it changes into a gas and
spreads in the room. The
gases particles can move
freely and flow easily.
