In defiant U.N. speech, president accuses global leaders and the media of spreading lies about the
rainforest, even as land clearing soars

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro defended his country’s sovereign right to develop the Amazon, in
a defiant speech before the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday, accusing global leaders and the
media of spreading lies and treating indigenous people as if they were cavemen.
“The Amazon is not being devastated and consumed by fire, as the lying media says,” Mr.
Bolsonaro said. “It is a fallacy to say that the Amazon is the patrimony of humanity,” he told world
leaders in New York City.
