A direct speech is a sentence that gives a statement or thought in its
original form according to how the original speaker said it.
Direct speech means to say exactly what someone else said.
It is usually put inside quotation marks (". . .").
A reported speech is a sentence that expresses the content of a statement
without quoting just like what is done in direct speech.
To change a direct speech to a reported speech and vice versa, you need to
take note of the following important details:
1. Tense of the verb (past tense)
2. Pronouns ( I becomes he or she )
Task 3: What did you say?
Direction: Analyze the given sentences. Change the direct speech to reported speech
and vice versa.
1. Mang Cesar said, “I bought five cavanes of rice.”
2. His son pointed out that he was really hungry since yesterday.
3. “I like to eat rice , ”Pare Crispin’s son said.
4. The wife of Crispin said that she was suffering from the drought.
5. Crispin’s wife reported, ”Five men stole the horses.”
Which one of the speeches is most useful? Why?
Direction: Analyze the given sentences. Change the direct speech to reported speech
and vice versa.
1. Pare Crispin replied, “My family accepted the rice you gave us.”
2. Mang Cesar stated that the rice was ready for harvesting.
3. He prepares the field every summer,” Mang Cesar stated.
4. The children mentioned that they played in the farm yesterday.
5. Pare Crispin said that he already fed Potro.
V. AGREEMENT Task: Travelling for the Needy
J. Additional activities for Directions: Imagine that you are rich and famous person who travels to help people around the
application or remediation Philippines.
Write a travelogue stating how you helped other people ,and how you affected them.
Your sentences should contain the statements of the people you helped pretending that you’ve
asked them using direct and reported speech. Use the sample travelogue as your guide while
you work on your activity.
