Along with the rapid growth of the national economy and increased living standards, the use of disposables and over-
packaged products has become common, which causes a waste of resources, and brings about a negative impact on the
environment. Many countries have started to act to control the use of disposables and over-packaged, products.
In 1994, the Ministry of Environment in Korea has put restrictions on packaging methods. Korea's legal regulations
require businesses to restrict their use of disposable products by reducing unnecessary packaging materials or not giving
them out to customers for free. The use of materials are difficult to recycle is also prohibited.
Thanks to development of technology, biodegradable materials were invented to produce packaging products. They are able
to decay naturally by bacteria. Therefore, biodegradable packaging helps to limit the amount of harmful chemicals released
into the environment. In 2008, biodegradable bags were put in use in most of the supermarkets in Korea. Paper cups and
paper bags are also given to shoppers for free, but in a limited use.
The ministry also established the detailed Guidelines on the Restrictions of Use of Disposable Products in order to ensure
that local governments could conduct systematic checks and inspections of businesses, and implemented reductions on over-
packaged products during national holidays, and school admission and graduation seasons.

Tourism will always have an impact on the places visited. Sometimes the impact is good, but often it is negative.
For example, if lots of people visit one place, then this can damage the environment. The question is - how can we minimize
the problems without preventing people from travelling and visiting places?
The main aim of ecotourism is to reduce the negative impact that tourism has on the environment and local people.
The idea is to encourage tourists to think about what they do when they visit a place.
It's great to talk about protecting the environment, but how do you actually do this?
There are a number of key points. Tourists shouldn't drop litter, they should stay on the
paths, they shouldn't interfere with wildlife and they should respect local customs and
traditions.
Some people see ecotourism as a contradiction. They say that any tourism needs
infrastructure - roads, airports and hotels. The more tourists that visit a place, the more of
these are needed and, by building more of these, you can't avoid damaging the environment.
But, of course, things aren't so black and white. Living in a place
of natural beauty doesn't mean that you shouldn't benefit from things like better roads. As long
as the improvements benefit the local people and not just the tourists, and the local communities
are consulted on plans and changes, then is there really a problem?
In 2002 the United Nations celebrated the "International Year of Ecotourism". Over the
past twenty years, more and more people have started taking eco-holidays. In countries such as
Ecuador, Nepal, Costa Rica and Kenya, ecotourism represents a significant proportion of the

The costs and benefits of global warming will vary greatly from area to area. For moderate climate change, the
balance can be difficult to assess. But the larger the change in climate, the more negative the consequences will become.
Global warming will probably make life harder, not easier, for most people This is mainly because we have already built
enormous infrastructure based on the climate we now have.
People in some temperate zones may benefit from milder winters, more abundant rainfall, and expanding crop
production zones. But people in other areas will suffer from increased heat waves, coastal erosion, rising sea le more erratic
rainfall, and droughts.
The crops, natural vegetation, and domesticated and wild animals (including seafood) that sustain people in a given
area may be unable to adapt to local or regional changes in climate. The ranges of diseases and insect pests that are limited
by temperature may expand, if other environmental conditions are also favourable.
In its summary report on the impacts of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated,

There are a number of key
points. Tourists shouldn't drop litter, they should stay on the paths, they shouldn't interfere with wildlife and they should
respect local customs and traditions.
Some people see ecotourism as a contradiction. They say that any tourism needs infrastructure - roads, airports and
hotels. The more tourists that visit a place, the more of these are needed and, by building more of these, you can't avoid
damaging the environment.
But, of course, things aren't so black and white. Living in a place of natural beauty doesn't mean that you shouldn't
benefit from things like better roads. As long as the improvements benefit the local people and not just the tourists, and the
local communities are consulted on plans and changes, then is there really a problem?
In 2002 the United Nations celebrated the "International Year of Ecotourism". Over the past twenty years, more and
more people have started taking eco-holidays. In countries such as Ecuador, Nepal, Costa Rica and Kenya, ecotourism
represents a significant part of the tourist industry.

In 1812 a young man called James Barry finished his studies in medicine at Edinburgh University. After graduating he
moved to London where he studied surgery at Guy’s Hospital. After that the popular young doctor joined the army and over
the next forty years had a brilliant career as an army medical officer, working in many far-off countries and fighting

13
successfully for improved conditions in hospitals. It was a remarkable career - made even more remarkable by the
discovery upon his death that he was in fact a she, James Barry was a woman.
No one was more surprised at this discovery than her many friends and colleagues. It was true that throughout her life people
had remarked upon her small size, slight build and smooth pale face. One officer had even objected to her appointment as a
medical assistant because he could not believe that Barry was old enough to have graduated in medicine. But no one had
ever seriously suggested that Barry was anything other than a man.
By all accounts Barry was a pleasant and good-humoured person with high cheekbones, reddish hair, a long nose and large
eyes. She was well-liked by her patients and had a reputation for great speed in surgery - an important quality at a time when
operations were performed without anaesthetic. She was also quick tempered. When she was working in army hospitals and
prisons overseas, the terrible conditions often made her very angry. She fought hard against injustice and cruelty and her
temper sometimes got her into trouble with the authority. After a long career overseas, she returned to London where she
died in 1865. While the undertaker’s assistant was preparing her body for burial, she discovered that James Barry was a
woman.
So why did James Barry deceive people for so long? At that time a woman could not study medicine, work as a doctor or
join the army. Perhaps Barry had always wante to do these things and pretending to be a man was the only way to make it
possible. Perhaps she was going to tell the truth one day, but didn’t because she was enjoying her life as a man too much.
Whatever the reason, Barry's deception was successful. By the time it was discovered that she had been the first woman in
Britain to qualify as a doctor, it was too late for the authorities to do anything about it.

In Africa, people celebrate with joy the birth of a new baby. The Pygmies would sing a birth-song to the child. In
Kenya, the mother takes the baby strapped to her back into the thorn enclosure where the cattle are kept. There, her husband
and the village elders wait to give the child his or her name.
In West Africa, after the baby is eight days old, the mother takes the baby for its first walk in the big, wide world, and
friends and family are invited to meet the new baby. In various African nations, they hold initiation ceremonies for groups of
children instead of birthdays. When children reach a certain designated age, they learn the laws, beliefs, customs, songs and
dances of their tribes. Some African tribes consider that children from nine to twelve are ready to be initiated into the grown-
up world. They may have to carry out several tests.
Masai boys around thirteen years old to seventeen undergo a two-stage initiation. The first stage lasts about three
months. The boys leave their parents' homes, paint their bodies white, and are taught how to become young warriors. At the
end of this stage, they have their heads shaved and they are also circumcised. The second stage, the young warriors grow
their hair long and live in a camp called a manyatta where they practice hunting the wild animals that might attack the Masai
herds. This stage may last a few years. When they are ready, they will marry and become owners of large cattle herds like

of the following questions.
Do you feel like your teenager is spending most of the day glued to a phone screen? You're not too far off. A new
survey from the Pew Research Center reveals the surprising ways that technology intersects with teen friendships – and the
results show that 57 percent of teens have made at least one new friend online. Even more surprisingly, only 20 percent of
those digital friends ever meet in person.
While teens do connect with their friends face-to-face outside of school, they spend 55 percent of their day texting with
friends, and only 25 percent of teens are spending actual time with their friends on a daily basis (outside of school hallways).
These new forms of communication are key in maintaining friendships day-to-day – 27 percent of teens instant message their
friends every day, 23 percent connect through social media every day, and 7 percent even video chat daily. Text messaging
remains the main form of communication – almost half of survey respondents say it's their chosen method of communication
with their closest friend.
While girls are more likely to text with their close friends, boys are meeting new friends (and maintaining friendships) in the
gaming world – 89 percent play with friends they know, and 54 percent play with online-only friends. Whether they're close
with their teammates or not, online gamers say that playing makes them feel "more connected" to friends they know, or
gamers they've never met.
When making new friends, social media has also become a major part of the teenage identity – 62 percent of teens are quick
to share their social media usernames when connecting with a new friend (although 80 percent still consider their phone
number the best method of contact). Despite the negative consequences-21 percent of teenage users feel worse about their
lives because of posts they see on social media – teens also have found support and connection through various platforms. In
fact, 68 percent of teens received support during a challenging time in their lives via social media platforms.
Just as technology has become a gateway for new friendships, or a channel to stay connected with current friends, it can also
make a friendship breakup more public. The study reveals that girls are more likely to block or unfriend former allies, and
68 percent of all teenage users report experiencing "drama among their friends on social media."

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each

Ecotourism is a unique way for travellers to engage in sustainable tourism while vacationing. Throughout the years,
specific "Eco" organizations, including Eco-resorts, wurs, and Non-Governmental Organizations, have developed across the
globe. This specific type of tourism is now increasingly becoming one of the more popular, with growth rates increasing
every year. The United Nations, aware of the fact that tourism could be one of the most detrimental activities if not planned
in accordance with the threshold imposed by nature, has declared the celebration of the International Day of Ecotourism, to
promote sustainable practices in this growing industry.
Recently, The Division for Sustainable Development, Small Island Developing States Unit, decided that in
preparation for the International Day of Ecotourism, it would be beneficial to identify successful practices of ecotourism on
small islands. In order for ecotourism to be categorized as successful, it must meet the following criteria: it must combine
natural and cultural tourism; it must involve local populations in the program, including providing educational resources to
the local community; it must identity, manage, and conserve the natural and cultural environment, as well as the resources on
the island; it must generate practices that will lead to the future sustainability of the island. If these criteria are followed by
an organization, it deserves to be recognized as successful.
In order to locate these certain organizations, the SIDS Unit started a thoughtful internet search for ecotourism
organizations. The focus was on four different categories: Eco-resorts and hotels, Eco-tours, Non-Governmental
Organizations involved in ecotourism, and Government Codes of Conduct and Guidelines regarding ecotourism for
travellers. Once an Internet-site that filled the criteria was located, further contact with the organizations was initiated,
enabling us to obtain further information directly from the source. Many of the organizations were delighted to correspond
with us and are eager to show all that their organization has achieved.
The stories presented come from across the globe and vary in success levels. While all of the organizations engage
in practicing ecotourism, some focus in different areas than others. This is due to a various number of reasons, including the
size of an organization, length of time the organization has been in existence, amount of funding available, and
economic/political situations occurring on the island. However, it is important to recognize that although some ecotourism
organizations are more developed than others, the ultimate goal of sustainable development, conservation and education
through ecotourism remains consistent.

IV.READING
Part 1. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Ecotourism is a unique way for travellers to engage in sustainable tourism while vacationing. Throughout the years, specific
"Eco" organizations, including Eco-resorts, wurs, and Non-Governmental Organizations, have developed across the globe.
This specific type of tourism is now increasingly becoming one of the more popular, with growth rates increasing every year.
The United Nations, aware of the fact that tourism could be one of the most detrimental activities if not planned in
accordance with the threshold imposed by nature, has declared the celebration of the International Day of Ecotourism, to
promote sustainable practices in this growing industry.
Recently, The Division for Sustainable Development, Small Island Developing States Unit, decided that in preparation for
the International Day of Ecotourism, it would be beneficial to identify successful practices of ecotourism on small islands. In
order for ecotourism to be categorized as successful, it must meet the following criteria: it must combine natural and cultural
tourism; it must involve local populations in the program, including providing educational resources to the local community;
it must identity, manage, and conserve the natural and cultural environment, as well as the resources on the island; it must
generate practices that will lead to the future sustainability of the island. If these criteria are followed by an organization, it
deserves to be recognized as successful.
In order to locate these certain organizations, the SIDS Unit started a thoughtful internet search for ecotourism organizations.
The focus was on four different categories: Eco-resorts and hotels, Eco-tours, Non-Governmental Organizations involved in
ecotourism, and Government Codes of Conduct and Guidelines regarding ecotourism for travellers. Once an Internet-site that
filled the criteria was located, further contact with the organizations was initiated, enabling us to obtain further information
directly from the source. Many of the organizations were delighted to correspond with us and are eager to show all that their
organization has achieved.
The stories presented come from across the globe and vary in success levels. While all of the organizations engage in
practicing ecotourism, some focus in different areas than others.

PART IV: READING
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Every summer, three billion birds of some 300 species-songbirds, waterbirds, and many others migrate from northern
Africa to Europe and Asia. In the winter, they return to Africa's warmer shores. As they travel from one place to another,
they navigate using the sun, the stars, smells, and land forms to help them find their way. Both large and small birds travel
thousands of kilometers, often stopping at locations along the way to rest.
The birds’ migration is long and difficult, and some of the animals inevitably die during each trip. However, it is not
this twice-a-year journey that poses the greatest risk to these animals. The main threat to the birds’ survival comes from
human hunters. All over the Mediterranean, millions of migrating birds are killed for food, profit, and sport every year. As a
result, bird populations are dropping all over the region. In nations along the Mediterranean, many migratory birds are
illegally trapped or shot. In addition to traps, hunters also use electronic calls to catch birds. This tool, which a hunter can
operate from a cell phone, mimics bird sounds and is very effective in attracting the animals so effective that in some
countries, bird populations have plummeted.
Countries all over the Mediterranean are aware that bird populations are in danger, and many are working to address
this problem. In the European Union, hunting migratory birds is illegal in some countries, while in others, it is strictly
controlled - the birds can only be hunted at a certain time of year. This hasn't completely stopped bird poaching in Europe,
but more nature-protection groups are making sure that laws are obeyed.
Across the Mediterranean, another group - Nature Conservation Egypt - is working to increase protection of its
country's natural scenery and wildlife, including its migratory birds. As part of a current project, the organization is trying to
promote activities such as eco-tourism along the coasts. Wildlife organizations around the Mediterranean are helping to bring
about change. Hunting bans are working, says Martin Schneider-Jacoby, a bird specialist for the German organization
EuroNatur. But there is still more to do. Conservationists hope to stop hunting and restore bird habitats all over the
Mediterranean. If this can be done, the birds’ numbers will increase. There's a long way to go, Schneider-Jacoby says, but
like an Oasis in the desert after a long journey, there is hope.

Most parents want their sons and daughters to have equal chances of success when they grow up. Today, equality of the
sexes is largely mandated by public policy and law. However, old- fashioned ideas and a lot of prejudice are still part of our
culture and present challenging questions for parents.
Gender stereotypes are rigid ideas about how boys and girls should behave. We all know what these stereotypes are: A
"feminine" girls should be insecure, accommodating and a little illogical in her thinking. A "masculine" boy should be
strong, unemotional, aggressive, and competitive. How are children exposed to these stereotypes? According to the
researchers David and Myra Sadker of the American University of Washington, D.C., boys and girls are often treated
differently in the classroom. They found out that when boys speak, teachers usually offer constructive comments, when
girls speech, teachers tend to focus on the behavior. It's more important how the girls act rather than what they say.

32
The emphasis on differences begins at birth and continues throughout childhood. For example, few people would give pink
baby's clothes to a boy or a blue blanket to a girl. Later, many of us give girls dolls and miniature kitchenware, while boys
receive action figures and construction sets. There's nothing wrong with that. The problem arises when certain activities are
deemed appropriate for one sex but not the other. According to Heather J. Nicholson, Ph.D., director of the National
Resource Center for Girls, Inc., this kind of practice prevents boys and girls from acquiring important skills for their future
lives.
"The fact is," says Nicholson, "that society functions as a kind of sorting machine regarding gender. In a recent survey,
fifty-eight percent of eighth-grade girls but only six percent of boys earned money caring for younger children. On the
other hand, twenty-seven percent of boys but only three percent of girls earned money doing lawn work". If we are serious
about educating a generation to be good workers and parents, we need to eliminate such stereotypes as those mentioned
previously.
Gender stereotypes inevitably are passed to our children. However, by becoming aware of the messages our children
receive, we can help them develop ways to overcome these incorrect ideas. To counteract these ideas, parents can look for
ways to challenge and support their children, and to encourage confidence in ways that go beyond what society's fixed
ideas about differences of sext are.

Tourism will always have an impact on the places visited. Sometimes the impact is good, but often it is negative. For
example, if lots of people visit one place, then this can damage the environment. The question is - how can we minimize the
problems without preventing people from travelling and visiting places?
The main aim of ecotourism is to reduce the negative impact that tourism has on the environment and local people. The idea
is to encourage tourists to think about what they do when they visit a place.
It's great to talk about protecting the environment, but how do you actually do this? There are a number of key points.
Tourists shouldn't drop litter, they should stay on the paths, they shouldn't interfere with wildlife and they should respect
local customs and traditions.
Some people see ecotourism as a contradiction. They say that any tourism needs infrastructure - roads, airports and hotels.
The more tourists that visit a place, the more of these are needed and, by building more of these, you can't avoid damaging
the environment.
But, of course, things aren't so black and white. Living in a place of natural beauty doesn't mean that you shouldn't benefit
from things like better roads. As long as the improvements benefit the local people and not just the tourists, and the local
communities are consulted on plans and changes, then is there really a problem?
In 2002 the United Nations celebrated the "International Year of Ecotourism". Over the past twenty years, more and more
people have started taking eco-holidays. In countries such as Ecuador, Nepal, Costa Rica and Kenya, ecotourism represents a
significant proportion of the tourist industry.
