Sec 4: Handout: Doubles Badminton!

Racquet hold:
Forehand grip: Apply a handshake grip, index finger slightly higher than other fingers, rest thumb on
left side of the handle. Your middle finger can slightly touch your thumb. Hold racquet lightly
Backhand grip: Apply a pinching grip, Thumb in center of the grip, keep your thumb and index finger at
the same level. The Backhand grip is similar to the forehand, however you use your thumb to press into
the racquet for a stroke.

Use a Forehand grip for forehand shots and use a backhand grip to hit backhand shots.

Types of Shots:
Forehand serve: Hit the birdie above the net, entering the opposing service court, using forehand.

Backhand serve: Hit the birdie above the net, entering the opposing service court, using backhand.

Use a serve based on your preference, but practice both!

Defensive Clear Shot: Hit the shuttle fast, high and deep into the backside of the opponent court. Its
purpose is to put your opponent out of position, to put the shuttle behind the opponent and to give you
more time to return to the center court and prepare for the next shot. Use this shot when the opponent is
near the front net.

Drop Shot: Hit the birdie lightly to the opponent front court, before the service line. Make it look like a
Drive Shot, but instead only use a small amount of power to push the birdie over the net. Use this shot
when the opponent is in the back court.

Smash shot. Hit the birdie with power and a steep downwards angle toward the opponent side. Think of
it as a Drive Shot that angles downwards. Aim for spots away from your opponent. Use this shot when
you are receiving a shot that is high.

Drive Shot. Hit the shuttle fast and powerfully to the opposing side. It is a flat ( прямий)shot. You can
aim at your opponent who will have to react quickly.

It is always important to disguise your shots so they will not become easy to predic t.

Scoring System:
1) A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.
2) Game is started by tossing the birdie, and seeing where it lands and points to.
3) If your score is odd, you serve on the left service court. If your score is even, serve from the right
service court.
4) If you score a point, the serving team serves again, and changes service courts. Same server.
5) The receiving team never changes service courts. You must win a rally to change service courts.

For the purposes of Phys. Ed. Class and our constraints, we will play 7 point doubles matches.
