EKC 216 PROCESS HEAT TRANSFER [SEM 2, 2021/2022]

GROUP ASSIGNMENT D

Date Submission: 27 April 2022; before 5pm

Solve problems of different mode of heat transfer involving conduction, convection and
CO1:PO1
radiation and its application in boiling and condensation

Chapter 3
1. A horizontal pipe 20 cm in diameter and 8 m long is buried in the earth at a depth of 15 cm. The pipe
wall temperature is 95oC and the earth surface temperature is 25oC. Assuming that the thermal
conductivity of the earth is 1.2 W/m.K, calculate the heat lost by the pipe.
2. A disk having a diameter of 42 cm and maintained at a temperature of 100oC is buried at a depth of 1.7
m in a semi-infinite medium having a surface temperature of 25oC and a thermal conductivity of 1.5
W/m.K. Calculate the heat loss by the disk.
3. Two parallel 32 cm diameter disks are separated by distance of 2.2 m in an infinite medium having k =
1.8 W/m.K. One disk is maintained at 98oC and the other at 30oC. Calculate the HT between the disks.
4. A small 62 by 62 by 62 cm on the inside is constructed of fireclay brick (k =1.1 W/m.K) with a wall
thickness of 8 cm. The inside of the furnace is maintained at 550oC, and the outside is maintained at
65oC. Calculated the heat transfer through the walls.
5. A cube 74 cm on each external side is constructed of fireclay brick. The wall thickness is 6 cm. The
inner surface temperature is 730oC and the outer surface temperature is 70oC. Compute the heat flow?
Take k = 1.04 W/m.K.

Chapter 4
6. A steel plate 2.2 cm thick is taken from a furnace at 730°C and quenched in a bath of oil at 30°C. If the
convection coefficient is 425 W/m2.K, how long will it take for the plate to cool to 130°C? Take k, ρ,
and C for the steel as 50 W/m.K, 7800 kg/m3 and 450 J/kg.K, respectively.
7. A steel rod 8.2 mm in diameter is initially at a uniform temperature of 32oC and is suddenly immersed
in a liquid at 195oC with h = 147 W/m2.K Calculate the time necessary for the rod temperature to reach
100°C? Take k, ρ, and C for the steel as 50 W/m.K, 7817 kg/m3 and 460 J/kg.K, respectively.
8. A steel ball [density = 7817 kg/m3, c = 460.6 J/kg.K., k = 35 W/m.K] 6.4 cm in diameter and
initially at a uniform temperature of 400oC is suddenly placed in a controlled environment of
80oC. The convection coefficient is 12 W/m2.K. Calculate the time constant and time required
for the ball to attain a temperature of 180oC.
