PROJECT CHARTER TEMPLATE

PURPOSE OF THE DOCUMENT:

The Project Charter will serve as an internal document that captures high level planning
information (scope, deliverables, assumptions, etc.) about the Project.

The Project Manager creates the Project Charter in the Initiation Phase of the Project, in
consultation with the Business Manager. Its purpose is to recognize the existence of the project
and to begin the planning process required to accomplish the Project goals. It is not intended to
be shared with the customer as a formal contract or legal document.

The Project Charter is an input to the Definition Phase of the Project where much of the
information contained herein forms the basis for detailed project planning.

1. PROJECT GOALS

The objective of this project is to relocate 78 staff members into a new workplace so as to
enable staff integration in time for the kick-off of the $5 million innovation grant research
scheduled to begin in 6 months.
This was necessitated because before now staff members were located in two separate
buildings on campus.
The new workplace is intended to be a high-quality, environmentally friendly, and energy-
efficient building, and it must be ready within 5 months of project approval so movement can
take place in the 6th month. The workplace will be built from sustainably sourced materials
and include features that will be energy conserving thus reducing the greenhouse effect in
accordance with global organizational standards. The initial top-down estimates provided
for is a budget not to exceed $450,000 and we will work according to this budget to deliver
on our key deliverables.

-A 6,500 square-foot finished workspace with a board room on the upper deck.
-Exterior finish according to organizational standards.
-Modular types of furniture and other office equipment like computers, printers, and fax machines.
-Energy independence systems with renewable energy.
-Well-finished interior with modular furniture.
-Deliver on the demolition mandate in the third month and ensure construction work begins in the
fourth month without fail.
-Ensure modular office installation in the fifth month so that the workplace will be ready for use in the
sixth month earmarked for the innovation research commencement.
-Integrated, intelligent control systems for lighting, heating, ventilation, and air
conditioning (HVAC), high-speed internet
-Finalize and complete the move in the sixth month.

3. SCOPE DEFINITION

The project will include:


 Standard interior and exterior finish using environmentally friendly materials.
 Integrated, intelligent control systems for lighting, heating, ventilation, air, and high-speed
internet to make a conducive work environment.
 Standard workstation to include equipment such as computers, printers, scanning machines,
and projectors.
 Purchase of office furniture and laptops.
 Demolition and reconstruction of the workplace to accommodate 78+ staff.
