PhonePe is a mobile payment platform using which you can transfer money using UPI,

Interface (UPI) system and all you need is to feed in your bank account details and create a
UPI ID. There is no need to recharge the wallet, because the money will be directly debited
from your bank account at the click of a button in a safe and secure manner. The best thing
about UPI is that it is a 24/7 service and can be used even on bank holidays and weekends.
The app can be downloaded on both Android and Apple phones.

PhonePe Private Limited, PhonePe, is an Indian e-commerce payment system and digital
wallet company headquartered in Bangalore, India. It was founded in December 2015 by

and receive money, DTH, recharge mobile, data cards, make utility payments, buy gold and
shop online and offline.[7] In addition PhonePe also allows users to book Ola rides, pay for

HISTORY

FxMart received its licence to operate on 26 August 2014. PhonePe was incorporated in
December 2015. In April 2016, the company was acquired by Flipkart and as a part of the
Flipkart acquisition, the FxMart license was transferred to PhonePe and it was rebranded as
the PhonePe wallet. PhonePe's founder Sameer Nigam was appointed as the CEO of the
company.
In August 2016, the company partnered with Yes Bank to launch a UPI-based mobile
payment app, based on the government-backed UPI platform.
Within 3 months of launch, the app was downloaded by over 10 million users. In 2018,
PhonePe also became the fastest Indian payment app to get a 50 million badge on the Google
play store. The PhonePe app overtook BHIM to emerge as the market leader in UPI
transactions in August 2017.

Features of PhonePe

To build a large, scalable & open transaction ecosystem that creates the maximum positive
impact for all stakeholders.

The name of PhonePe sounds quite similar to its peers Google Pay, Paytm, Amazon Pay, and
more because it is essential a payments app. However, PhonePe has an interesting take on the
word "pay." PhonePe writes it as "Pe," thereby evoking the Hindi connotation of the term,
making "PhonePe" sound as "on the phone," which is equally apt because PhonePe is an app
that operates through mobile phones!

PhonePe chose purple to be the primary color and worked out the logo using the Hindi font to
write "Pe", which quickly helps its users recall the Hindi connotation of their brand name.

PhonePe goes by the tagline "Karte Ja. Badhte Ja," which means "Keep doing, keep growing"
written on a very positive note that hints towards the transactions on the app and the
expansion of the business of PhonePe.

CHAPTER-3
Data Finding
&
Analysis

19
3.1 – DATA FINDING

PhonePe has been steaming ahead with its UPI platform coming forth as a formidable player
after processing 868 million transactions worth Rs 1.75 lakh crore during November. The
company’s growing scale is also visible from its 2X growth in FY20.

During FY20, the payments firm has managed to double its revenue from operations which
grew from Rs 184.2 crore in FY19 to Rs 371.8 crore in FY20.

Around 94.2% of the revenue was collected from payment services, amounting to Rs 350.2
crore in FY20, growing 2.18X from Rs 160.8 crore earned in FY19. The remainder 5.8% was
generated from advertising sales which stood at Rs 23.41 crore while another Rs 55.5 crore
was earned via financial instruments during FY20.

Moving over to the expense sheet, at 46.14%, advertising costs accounted for the largest share
of total expenditure. The Walmart group-owned company trimmed down these expenses by
21.6%, dropping down to Rs 1,016.6 crore in FY20 from Rs 1,296.7 crore in FY19.

PhonePe also reduced its spends on employee benefits by 9.8%, which reduced from Rs 532
crore in FY19 to Rs 480 crore during FY20.

The company invested Rs 284.5 crore during the fiscal ended in March 2020 on acquiring
capital assets (including IT Systems and Software) while depreciation and amortization costs
witnessed an uptick of 370%, growing from Rs 23.7 crore in FY19 to Rs 87 crore booked in
FY20.
Another Rs 16.2 crore was spent on building rent and repair which grew by 47.3% during
FY20. PhonePe outsources a number of operational activities to third parties and fellow
Walmart group companies. These outsourced contract service expenses amounted to Rs 208.5
crore in FY20, jumping 3.8X from Rs 54 spent on the same during FY19.

20
Ancillary payment processing expenditure amounted to Rs 150.1 crore in FY20, growing by
74% as compared to Rs 86.3 crore spent during previous fiscal.

PhonePe’s losses on bad debts and forex transactions ballooned 5X to Rs 48.6 crore during
FY20 while licensing and services expenses grew 2.3X to Rs 24.5 crore during the same
period. Further customer support costs added Rs 53.5 crore to Phonepe’s total expenditure to
Rs 2,276.6 crore during FY20 which grew by only 2.3% YoY.

On the unit level, the company spent Rs 5.93 to earn a single rupee of operating revenue in
FY20, improving by nearly 50% as compared to Rs 11.7 spent for the same in FY19

The payments firm’s efforts to control costs paid off and it managed to reduce its annual
losses by 7%, which stood at Rs 1,771.7 crore in FY20 as compared to Rs 1,904.7 crore it lost
during the previous fiscal. EBITDA margins also improved from -766.3% in FY19 to -395%
in FY20.

21
PhonePe, the Walmart-owned digital payment platform, more than doubled its losses in 2018-
19 to Rs 1,905 crore compared to a year before, according to a registrar of companies (RoC)
filing.

The firm, facing stiff competition from financial technology giant Paytm, as well as Google
Play, has been working hard on gaining market share. Revenue in FY19 rose fivefold, to Rs
245.8 crore. According to previous RoC filings, the net loss in 2017-18 was Rs 791 crore, way
higher than the Rs 129 crore in FY17.

Employee benefit expense in FY19 had risen 308 per cent to Rs 531 crore from a year before.

Google Pay posted a net profit of Rs 5.1 crore in FY19, with revenue of Rs 1,119 crore, an
increase of 2.5 times as compared to the Rs 438.3 crore in FY18. PhonePe has been on an
expansion drive. It has been trying to increase its footprint offline to take on Paytm and
Google Pay, which has made major inroads into tier-III/tier-IV cities and smaller towns.

The company last month announced that its app drove 380 million transactions in August,
with 90 million offline transactions. It claims to be accepted as a payment option across 6.5
million offline stores in 210 cities. According to several reports, the company is independently
trying to raise close to a billion dollars for a next stage of expansion. It claims to have at least
150 million users.

While PhonePe operates its payments system through semi-closed prepaid instrument services
and Unified Payment Interface (UPI), it says it is ‘also actively exploring other business
avenues in the payments and e-commerce space’. PhonePe banks on its offline merchants to
make payments through not only UPI but also credit cards, debit cards and external wallets.

Payment apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm are in an increasingly competitive
market. While some incumbents took time to switch to the government-endorsed UPI,
PhonePe, and Google Pay built their systems around the platform. Recently, UPI claimed to
have completed a billion transactions since its launch three years ago.
