Question 1: Two parallel shafts, connected by a cross belt, are provided with pulleys 480
mm and 640 mm in diameters. The distance between the center lines of the shafts is 3 m. Find
how much the length of the belt should be changed if is desired to alter the direction of
rotation of the driven shaft.

Question 2: A belt runs over the pully of 750 mm diameter. The angle of contact is 165 0 and
running with a speed of 200 rpm. The maximum tension develop in the belt is 2 KN.
Determine the power transmitted by the belt, if the coefficient of the friction between the belt
and pully is 0.3.

Question 3: A shaft which rotates at a constant speed of 160 rpm is connected by belting to a
parallel shaft 720 apart, which has to run at 60,80 and 100 rpm. The smallest pully on the
driving shaft is 40 mm in radius. Determine the remaining radii of the two stepped pulleys for
(1) a crossed belt, and 2. An open belt. Neglect belt thickness and slip.

Q. 4 A 6 mm thick belt is used for power transmit between a shafts which are 500 cm apart.
The diameter of the smaller pulley is 600 mm and coefficient of friction between belt and
pulley is 0.25. The drive transmits a 8000 W power from a shaft rotating at 240 rpm to
another shaft rotating at 160 rpm. If the maximum stress in belt is limited 3 N/mm 2.
Determine the width of the belt for
(1) cross belt drive
(2) open belt drive
