VISA – GENERAL INFORMATION

After the admission procedure is successfully completed, you need to apply for a
long-term visa for study purposes at the nearest Czech embassy/consulate as
soon as possible.

Applying step by step:

1. Find out at which consulate you will apply.
2. Arrange a deadline for submitting the application
• Consulates order applicants within their own competence, usually by e-
mail or telephone - you can find out how to order directly on the
consulate's website.
• Applications are submitted in person for the purpose of the interview
and fingerprints taking.
3. Submit the following with your application:
• Travel document
• Filled-in form - Application for a long-term / permanent residence permit
(the green one)
• Photos (two peaces)
• Biometric data (fingerprints)
• Supporting documents (proving):
◦ Purpose of stay - most often the confirmation of admission to study
from the university
◦ Accommodation
◦ Funds
• Criminal record
• Fee
• Travel health insurance - only when receiving the approved visa, not
when applying for it
• Do not miss the following:
• The documents (attached to the application) must not be older than 180
days, except for the passport and photo (if it corresponds to your
current appearance).
• The documents (attached to the application) must be submitted in the
Czech language. Documents in a foreign language must also be
submitted in an officially certified translation into the Czech
language.

▪1▪
• Foreign official documents must be provided with so-called higher
verification.
• Passport and the supporting document proving the purpose of stay must
be presented in the original. These originals will be returned to the
applicant if he/she wishes to keep them.
• Other particulars may be submitted in the original or as an officially
certified copy.
• Applicants are asked to prepare a set of copies of all the documents as
well.
• Submit only complete applications with all necessary attachments.
• Proceedings on applications that do not contain all the prescribed
requirements will be stopped, and the applicant will be invited to
complete them (§ 169i + § 169r, paragraph 4 of the Act on the Stay of
Aliens). This will extend the time to process the application.
4. Wait for the decision
• Applications for a long-term residence permit for the purpose of study
are processed within the statutory period of up to 60 days.
5. If your visa is approved, buy travel insurance
• Foreigners are obliged to be insured during their stay in the Czech
Republic. When collecting the visa, submit an officially certified
translation of the insurance contract and general insurance conditions
into the Czech language proving the conclusion of the travel health
insurance and its scope.
• At the request of the consulate, be ready to provide the proof of
payment for the insurance.
6. Pick up the visa if it is approved or the refusal form if the visa is refused.
• Applicants can take away their passports with visas themselves or they
can authorize someone to do so. In such a case, the authorized person
must submit a certified power of attorney. If the applicant informs the
consulate at the time of application that the passport with the visa will be
taken away by someone else, a power of attorney is not required.
Note: The issuance of a visa does not automatically entitle the holder to enter the
Czech Republic, resp. Schengen area. At the external borders, the visa holder is
obliged to prove that he / she meets the conditions for entry set out in the
Schengen Borders Code and may be required to present proof of accommodation,
purpose of stay, etc. upon entry.
Long-term residence permit is intended for citizens of so-called third
countries – i.e. countries outside the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and
Switzerland.
