Illustrating Derivative of a Function 4

Lesson
I
After going through this learning material, you are expected to: 1) illustrate
tangent line to the graph of a function at a given point; 2) apply the definition of
the derivative of a function a given number; 3) relate derivative of a function to
the to the slope of a tangent line

Note: Please answer all the learning tasks in a separate sheet of paper.

Learning Task 1: Draw one tangent line on each graph.

1. 2. 3.

D
Learning Task 2: Find the slope of the given two points
1. (5,2); (2,3)
2. (0,3); (-2,5)
3. (3,5); (0, -8)
4. (1/2,3); (1,5)
5. (4,0); (3, -5)

DISCUSSION
Looking at the graph of f(x) = x2—2 and f(x) = x + 5
we can notice that the line is the secant of the parabola.
We find another line which is tangent to the parabola.
How are we going to find the equation of the tangent line?
In finding the equation of the line, we need two points or
one point and a slope. But, on the figure we only have
one point given. Thus, we need the point from the secant
line. If we are going to get the limit of the slope of the se-
cant line we can get the slope of the tangent line.

Illustrative Examples
1. Find the equation of the tangent line to y = x 2- 4x + 5 at x = 1
First we need to consider the formula of the slope, Thus, we need x sub 0
which is 1, the f(x) which is x2—4x + 5 and the f(x) can be obtained by substitut-
ing x sub 0 to f(x). By substitution: 12—4(1) + 5= 2. Then we proceed to the formu-
la to get the value of slope.

Since the slope (m) is -2, we proceed in

finding the equation of the tangent line using
the formula in finding the equation of the line
given one point and a slope

2. Find the equation of the tangent line to the curve at x = -2. Let us list all the
given needed for the formula,

Definition of Derivative
The derivative of function is defined as instantaneous change in rate. In
the previous topic, we have seen the formula for the slope of a tangent line which
is also a formula in finding a specific derivative of a function at a given number.

Alternative Definition of Derivative
The first derivative is interpreted as the slope of a curve at that point.
hence,

Let
