1. Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences - Marine Biology

The BS Marine Biology degree, offered by the Department of Biological Sciences, prepares
students for careers in marine science and graduate programs. Students have the opportunity to
take specialized, upper-division coursework on the SJSU Campus and at our affiliated Moss
Landing Marine Laboratory in Monterey.

2. Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science - Applied Nutrition and Food Sciences

The Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science with a concentration in Applied Nutrition and Food
Sciences, offered by the Department of Nutrition, Food Science and Packaging, provides students
with the education and background needed to gain employment in settings as diverse as
community organizations, educational institutions, hospitals, health and fitness, nutrition and
research laboratories, corporations and government agencies. The course plan emphasizes
providing a scientific foundation in introductory chemistry, bacteriology and human physiology.
Support courses in psychology, statistics and economics also provide a strong background.
Numerous courses in nutrition education, health in multicultural populations, community
nutrition, food science, epidemiology, food safety and sanitation, cultural aspects of food, as well
as nutrition, provide the industry-focused education needed for the graduates to succeed in their
careers. Students complete a field experience course planned for a higher level of work
responsibilities with enrollment as a senior for 90 hours. A carefully prepared multi-year program
of study will ensure an appropriate sequencing of required courses and students should seek early
and frequent advice from departmental advisors.

3. Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics - Applied and Computational

Mathematics

This degree is recommended for students who wish to work in the research and development area
of industry. This program also prepares a student for graduate study in applied mathematics,
numerical analysis, or operations research.
The concentration in Applied and Computational Mathematics, offered by the Department of
Mathematics and Statistics, provides a solid foundation in classical applied mathematics as well as
computational mathematics, which could be informally described as “how to employ mathematics
on computers wisely.” A graduate could seek direct employment assisting a group of scientists
with the formulation and solution of problems. There is a great need in local and national
technical industries for people with sufficiently strong mathematical knowledge to participate on
such teams. For example, modern techniques for solving partial differential equations are very
sophisticated, the best method in a given situation depends on the properties of the model. Once
a numerical approximation has been formulated, the techniques to solve that, and the commercial
software available to do it, again require informed decisions.
4. Bachelor of Science in Public Health - Community Health Education

The Department of Public Health and Recreation prepares leaders and practitioners who promote
health and improve the environments in which we live, work, learn, and play. We strive to
embrace a Teacher-Scholar-Practitioner Model through student, alumni, faculty, and community
engagement to advance practices in public health and recreation fields. Our undergraduate
curriculum in public health examines the multiple dimensions/determinants of health (e.g.,
physical, emotional, social, environmental, and spiritual) and the scientific and practical basis for
understanding and promoting health at the population level (including epidemiology, policies, and
community health) to create the optimal, meaningful conditions for health and wellness for all.

All of our programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels incorporate student-centered
curriculums with our commitment to community development, social justice orientations,
interdisciplinary and intercultural/globalized approaches with its emphasis on rigor and
innovation, high-impact experiential learning, and career-focused applied orientations. Developed
by our recent strategic planning process, our new vision statement of the department is as follows
- “We aspire to be innovators and leaders in learning and teaching, scholarship, and professional
practice by integrating public health and recreation to ignite social change and work towards a
more vibrant, prosperous, and just world where the optimal health and wellbeing of individuals
and communities are achieved and sustained.”

5. Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics

The BA - Mathematics, offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is recommended

for students who enjoy problem solving and would like to apply problem solving skills along with
communication and analyzing skills in a future career. This degree also provides an excellent
background for graduate work in mathematics and other disciplines including law and medicine as
well as engineering and science.
The degree requires 30 upper division units of mathematics and computer science. If upper
division mathematics and computer science requirements are satisfied using lower division
transferred courses, then additional upper division math courses will need to be taken to obtain
the required number of upper division units.

1. Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics

The primary aim of applied mathematics is to elucidate scientific concepts and to describe and
predict phenomena through the use of mathematics. The applied mathematician is at once a
mathematical specialist and a systems analyst whose task is to confront complex real-world
problems with mathematical analysis. In business and industry, the applied mathematician has
opportunities to utilize both background and training in solving problems of a practical nature. To
do so, one must know the mathematical theories involved and have an appreciation for the specific
science or technology that provides the source of the problem.
