Course Overview
This curriculum prepares students for graduate work in chemistry or for responsible
positions in industrial or government laboratories. This degree, offered by the Department
of Chemistry, meets all requirements for Certification by the American Chemical Society. It
does not require a minor, although with judicious choice of electives, a minor may be
obtained in biology, mathematics or physics.
7. BS in Environmental Studies
Course Overview
Bachelor of Science -
Kinesiology
Kinesiology is the disciplinary study of physical activity and how it impacts
individual and societal health and well-being. The discipline explores physical
activity from a wide range of cognate disciplines, including, but not limited to,
biomechanics, physiology, history, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and
pedagogy. It involves areas of study that include sports performance, fitness
leadership, sports medicine and related allied health professions, socio-cultural
analysis of sport, sport and exercise psychology, physical education, and
coaching.
The BS in Kinesiology degree prepares students for careers in the fitness and
exercise and allied health professions. Our mission is to prepare graduates who
are knowledgeable, professional, and take a multidisciplinary approach to
promoting physical activity. The degree not only examines the theoretical
underpinning of sport, exercise, fitness and health, but is committed to addressing
the practical issues concerning coaching and instructing, exercise, fitness and
sport. It also addresses prescription; programming and safety in promoting health
and performance-related physical activity; and issues of social justice in and
through sport. The diverse curriculum strives to be innovative and encourage
creative thinking and practice.
The program outcomes are aligned with the University’s Institutional Learning
Outcomes, the College of Education and Allied Studies Conceptual Framework,
and the American Kinesiology Association’s Learning Outcomes. At the completion
of the program graduates will be able to do the following:
1. Acquire a multi-disciplinary perspective in kinesiology
2. Explain the importance of life-long physical activity
3. Explain the importance of professionalism and socially just practice in kinesiology
4. Communicate using relevant and contextually compelling content
5. Use evidence-based practices in kinesiology
6. Critically evaluate situations, questions, and issues in kinesiology
The Chemistry, B.S. degree is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS).
A certified degree is a valuable credential that serves as national-level recognition
for completing a rigorous academic chemistry curriculum in an ACS-approved
department. The extra rigor of an ACS certified degree is valued by both potential
employers and graduate schools.
Bachelor of Science -
Environmental Science
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences offers undergraduate study
leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, focusing on
developing strong foundational knowledge and a broad set of field and laboratory
skills that allow students to seek employment, or prepare them for continued
academic study in the Earth and environmental sciences.
Environmental science is an interdisciplinary field, focusing on the study of
physical, chemical, and biological processes that underpin both natural
ecosystems and human-influenced systems. While their focus is often on the
physical and life sciences, environmental scientists must also be mindful of social
issues, political context, economic factors, and human well-being in order to
understand environmental issues and address environmental problems. The
coursework for the Environmental Science degree reflects this broad, systems-
level approach, with coursework in science and mathematics, as well as the social
sciences. This allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the science and
social issues involved in addressing complex environmental problems such as
environmental contamination, access to food and safe drinking water, and climate
change.
The undergraduate degree program in Environmental Science includes a core of
required courses intended to provide students with an understanding of the
fundamental principles of biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, and
statistics necessary to understand environmental challenges. In addition, further
required courses and electives allow students to apply this fundamental knowledge
to broader environmental issues and problems, and to deepen their understanding
of natural systems, human systems, and sustainability. The Environmental Science
B.S. program serves as preparation for employment in a variety of related fields,
both in technical and policy/management roles requiring extensive technical
knowledge and background. Due to the breadth of disciplines involved in
environmental science, students wishing to do independent work professionally
may wish to consider graduate study in a field of specialization, if further training is
required for their chosen path.
The B.S. in Agricultural Plant and Soil Sciences prepares you for successful careers that
support the long-term economic viability and sustainability of California's fresh produce
and horticulture industries. The applied, interdisciplinary major incorporates practical,
hands-on learning and industry or research internship placements to provide college-to-
career pathways. You will develop expertise in crop management, including crop
physiology and life cycles, the role of soil, water, nutrient and pest management on crop
quality, yield, sustainability, and profitability, as well as relevant laws and regulations. The
curriculum aligns with the content specified for Certified Crop Advisor certification and Pest
Control Advisor certification.
2. Biology, BS
