OBJECTIVE: To make fans/readers feel like they were right there in the middle of
the action, cheering on their favorite team, game after game. The sports writer is
expected to provide a complete and accurate picture of events.
HEADLINE/TITLE – They must be short and accurate. In sports, headlines are also
lively grabbers of a reader's attention.
LEAD – It summarizes or analyzes the event by giving the significance, the winner,
the hero, the score, the place and time or date when the event happens.
BODY – It contains the play-by-play account of the game like the most crucial part
of the game, star player and etc.
CONCLUSION – It contains the quotes from players and coaches, statistics and team
standing.
Examples:

❖ Eagles namayagpag kontra Archers sa Exhibition Game, 3-0
Examples:
Imus Bombers came away victorious after taking down the host Dasmarinas
Spikers in their Game One of the Best of Three Series, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19,
25-20, during the Intertown Volleyball Tournament held at Ugnayang La Salle
yesterday.
THE BODY
Team and/or Individual Standing- if the event is part of a series of games, the
story must report how the teams or players stand in relation to their competitors.
Decisive play- this is the most crucial part of the game that gives a certain team the
winning margin.
Best scores for the day – the scores usually appear in the headline and in the lead.
However, the writer must not neglect the top scorer of the day.
Play-by-play – due to limited space, play-by-play has to be condensed. In top boxing
events, a separate round-by-round account is provided, describing the progress of the
fight in detail.
Quotation – It is customary for the hero of the day to have his sentiments recorded
for posterity.
• The Score or Outcome – Who won? What is the result of the game?
• The Significance of the Outcome – Was a champion at stake? Do the
standings of the teams change? Who gets the cup? Is the grudge wiped out?
(Championship, do or die, elimination)
• Highlights of the game – Find the turning point of the game. Describe
spectacular plays. Tell about the last minutes fumble, or last three second
basket from midcourt if it were a basketball game. (Key plays, baskets, run and
time executed)
• Comparison of the Teams - Which was the better team? Was the defending
champion out-jumped on the rebound? Who did better from the foul line?
(Mother school, the height, age)
• Individual stars – refers to the heroes of the game. (Name, age, height,
weapon, strategy)
• Weather conditions – mud, sunshine, heat cold, or wind may have bearing
on the game.
• Crowd and celebration – how did the spectators behave? Were they
particularly hostile to the referee?
Examples:

PLAY BY PLAY (4TH – 10TH PARAGRAPH) - includes highlight per set, round, or
quarter. It is better if two paragraphs per set, round or quarter.
General rule: one sentence, one paragraph.
Example:
Dasmarinas’s ace spiker Pascual wounded with 20 points coming from 15 attacks,
three denials and two service aces but barely got help from her teammates to
succumb to the visiting Imus.
Example:
“Hindi pa nakakarecover si Thirdy sa Covid-19 mentally kaya medyo hindi pa
lumalabas ang kanyang tunay na laro, “, ani coach Ryan Gregorio.
Examples:
Bunsod nito ay aasintahin ng Thailand na mapanatili and malinis na kartada
sa paghaharap sa defending champion na Pilipinas, samantala susubukang
makopo ng South Korea and unang tagumpay sa tunggalian kontra Japan.
Dasmarinas will try to secure the Finals berth next week in their Game Two
battle against the same opponent.
The Key Play - This is usually used when the best angle of the sports event through
the collective effort of all the members of the winning team.
Example:
The Senior Sluggers bombed the Junior Batters with six runs in the third
inning to subdue a nerve-wrecking junior rally during the Solsona National High
School Intrams, August 26.
The Outstanding Player – When one or two members of the team seem to stand
out the rest of the players that caused the team to win the game. Their heroic deed
is the best angle to start a sport news.
Example:
Nate Robinson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, leading the New York
Knicks to a 105-102 overtime win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the National
Basketball Association play at Madison Square Garden, Sunday.
Analytical Approach – This is used when the team employs a very spectacular
strategy or action that brings them to victory.
Example:
Banking on sturdy wallops, deadly spikes and tricky placings, Ilocos Sur
National High School Netters dethroned Candon City National High School in
the crucial third set of their volleyball championship game, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21,
25-23) in the Division Athletic Association Meet at Vigan City, December 9.

VOLLEYBALL:
Attack line: a line 3m from the net which marks the limit for where a back-row player
may advance to hit a ball from above the net.
Back-row player: any volleyball player positioned at the back of the court between the

Block: an attempt by a player to prevent an opposing player from hitting the ball over
the net by jumping near the net with their arms in the air. The volleyball player must
not touch the net.
Dig: a defensive move in which the player’s arms are placed together in an attempt
to bounce a difficult ball up into the air for other teammates to continue the play.
End line: a back boundary line of the court.
Front zone: the area between the net and the attack line.
Front-row player: any volleyball player who is positioned close to the net.

Libero: a substitute defensive player who is especially adept at digging.
Rotate: what the players do when moving to the next position on the floor in a

Carreon scored 21 points to lead Isabela and Gonzales 13points but delivered this
