On March 23, 2021, the container ship Ever Given was on its journey between the
port of Tanjung palapas in Malaysia and Rotterdam in the Netherlands. When it
was sailing through the Suez Canal in Egypt, according to the shipping company,
the vessel was hit by a strong sandstorm with a wind speed of 74 kilometers per
hour causing it no longer to be steerable. At 7:40 am, the ship ramped into the
sidewall of the canal. About half an hour later, at first, the Egyptian tugboats and
firefighting ships arrived but freeing the ship was prove to be a difficult undertaking.
The ground images of the ship show that the ship has dug itself in the sidewall of
the canal. Whereas the satellite image of the ship reveals that how the ship is
blocking the whole passage of the canal. The cause and information of this
massive event are still under investigation. But there are a lot of things we need to
know, how could something massive like this happen, and why did it take so long-
time to fix?

- So, before we come to the event, let’s learn a bit about Ever Given container ship.
The Ever Given is the kind of ship that can carry 20,124 containers. This capacity
makes it one of the larger container ships in the world. The early attempts to free
the ship with the help of tugboats alone did not lead to success. Therefore,
excavators begin to free the ship with the new concept. If we talk about the canal,
then this artificial canal connects the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea for the
busy trade routes between the Indian ocean and the North Atlantic. This directly
means that ships do not have to travel through the European and Asian or African
continent. It is a global shortcut. This makes it one of the most significant routes for
global commerce. This canal reduces the travel time for the container ship by eight
to ten days. But with the blockage of this canal, the only alternative is to travel
through the entire African continent. This canal is an important provider of revenue
for Egypt. Egypt receives more than 5 billion US dollars annually. However, one
limitation of the canal is that a huge part of the route can only be shipped in a
single lane. Therefore, there is a problem with traffic. Also, there are some waiting
areas where ships can wait for the traffic and can turn around too. There was an
expansion to the Suez Canal in 2015. And currently, it is 200 meters wide and
approximately 24 meters deep. The challenges required to navigate these huge
vessels through the canal are tricky enough. And this is not the first time when
canal blocks. But a ship has been stuck in the canal in 2004, which blocks the
canal for three days. However, where Ever Given ship was stuck, there is only a
single lane, which means the problem of traffic arises. There were about 370 ships
were waiting on both sides of the canal. With the uncertainty that how long will
canal blocks, it became difficult for shipping companies whether to wait or to send
their ships on the way to Cape of Good Hope. While some of them have made this
expensive decision. This situation was critical for ships that have livestock on hold
where there is a limited amount of food and water for these long delays. Although,
blockage came at a very sudden time when supplies are also in limited edition with
the coronavirus pandemic.
- In many countries, the ratio of imports and exports has changed and also there is
lower production in many areas specifically in Europe and North America. In
contrast to it, imports from Asia are still needed. Take, for example, China where
production was going to start up but this leads to the shortage of containers. The
reason behind this is they leave Asia but did not come back at the same speed.
Similarly, North America faces a 40 shortage of containers that means with every
100 containers only 40 containers are exported. Because of the delays that
happened on the Suez Canal, the logistics system is already tensed.
- On March 29, at about 3 pm roughly after 150 hours authorities were able to free
the vessel. They took advantage of high spring tides around the full moon and with
the help of 14 tugboats. The Ever Given then shipped to the great bitter for
inspection. And the traffic of the Suez Canal was continued. Till 7 pm, the blockage
was resolved.

- With global implications, shipping analysts already predicting disruption and price
hikes. Europe is likely to hit first with the shortage of household products. It might
seem that this blockage does not have any effect on us as it is in indirect ways. But
it does, and it not only affects some of us but all of us. About 12 percent of the
world trade volume passes through the Suez Canal and it is a complete blockage
for just a few days can effect a big amount of goods. And can cause severe
economic effects, both due to the direct damage as well as the uncertainty it
causes.

On March 23rd, a 200,000-tonne container ship named Ever Given was lodged sideways of the ship effectively blocked the Suez Canal.
Consequently, other vessels were left trapped on both side of the ship. Although the Ever Given has since been freed but it was not an easy feat. With
a mighty effort consisting of 14 tugboats, large-capacity dredgers and diggers on the ground, the ship finally came unstuck after removing 30,000
cubic metres of sand over six days. Although this may seem like a short period of time although this blockage resulted in a litany of detrimental
ramifications. The Suez Canal occupies a strategic location between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Its significance lies mainly in its use as a
trade route that is the shortest sea route between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
