REPORTER: Indeed, the internet is probably the first place you go to find out about specialist holidays,
because it has become the primary source of information on travel. Sean Dodson is a travel columnist for the
Guardian newspaper, and has been observing – both as a journalist and as a traveller – its increasing
influence on the way we plan and organize journeys ***** home and abroad. Sean joins me now. What’s
the range of websites on offer nowadays, Sean? What facilities are they offering the travellers?
SEAN: There’s a complete proliferation of services now on the internet from the ehm … from five-start
hotels to cheap buses that will take you from various different Chinatowns in North America. The complete
range is there, there is almost nothing that you can’t buy on line.
R: When did they all start?
S: The first travel websites arose*** about 1995. Expedia, which has now become a household name was, I
think, the first travel website in America. We were a bit slower in Britain, it took about a year to capture on.
The World**** travel agent, which is Thomas Cook, and it’s British, I believe, had the first web presence
back in … back in 1995. And it was quickly followed by a number of other companies. The Lonely Planet
were quite quick, they started their Thorn Tree message boards around the same time. And then the first
travel start-up, British internet start-up was cheapflights.co.uk, which is still around, of course, and it’s
doing very well. So from a quite a slow start there was a quick blossoming of sites. Many of the sites have
become household names starting that period*** including lastminute.com.
R: Exactly, that’s within ten years with especially escalating in the past few years that they’ve really taken
off. What effect did they have on the travel industry and on the way we travel?
S: It’s been a massive effect, I think. I think it’s given us more control, and it’s given consumers a lot more
control. I remember when I was booking my first holiday, I’d go down to the travel agent, and they’d have a
computer screen, but it was turned towards them, and you almost had to negotiate with them. And if you
kind of pleaded them, you know, a cheaper price would emerge, but now I fell we have that control. And it’s
changed, not only how we book holidays, but the sort of placed we go. Low-cost airlines, for example, are

flying to places that were really on many people’s radar*** 10 years ago, and now become quite
commonplace.
R: You mentioned in line of cheap flights lastminute.com. They were initially able to offer much cheaper
flights than established firms. How did they do that?
S: Similar websites certainly had cheaper overheads, because they haven’t to lease a shop, for example, and
perhaps pay less staff. I don’t think there has ever been a great difference between what travel agents have
and what’s available on the internet. I think the margin there is quite small. I mean you can spend … I’ve
spend hours trying to save myself ten quid, you know.
R: Yes, I think we’ve all done that exactly. But is it that thing of choice then you were mentioning earlier,
that it’s more fun to be doing that research and it’s more fun to make these bookings, and if you want to
think about it, say I’ve saved myself ten quid.
S: I think when you*** start planning a holiday, it’s almost as if your holiday has begun. I used to buy a
guidebook, for example. When reading the guidebook, planning the trip was almost like began … I was in
that mental space of being on holiday. And I think searching the internet for a cheap deal or just a good deal
is a way of beginning your holiday maybe when you’re at work, maybe when you should be doing
something else.
