MX4SIO - [00] english manual 2/9

1 [10] Description
[11] MX4SIO (Memory Expansion for SIO) is an adapter for using SD and microSD cards in the
slot of a PlayStation and PlayStation 2 by using homebrew software. It is not possible to use an
SD card as a Memory Card! Only homebrew software is able to access SD cards!
[12] The adapter is available in two versions, one for microSD cards and one for large SD cards
(microSD via an adapter). Two LEDs are indicating an inserted SD card (green) and data
transmission (blue). The case is printed with a 3D printer.

[13] The design is to be regarded as "final". The hardware is tested, changes are not planned.

[14] The groundwork for this hardware was laid on psxtools.de and psx-place.com and hat
grown further in cooperation with some developers (mainly Maximus32 and wisi) and beta-
testers. With my work, I want to support this project and provide potential users with the
necessary hardware. Therefore, it is explicitly allowed to share this data package and to
manufacture the board yourself. It would be appreciated, if the data package was only shared
as a whole. Furthermore, I payed attention to mainly use large components to allow people
with little soldering experience to easily assemble the board.
[15] All information about this project, files and links can be found on trisaster.de: MX4SIO (EN)

2 [20] Production
[21] There is a single board design, which can be assembled differently depending on the
desired variant. The 3D case also depends on the chosen variant.

2.1 [22] Schematic

[23] The schematic includes all components for both variants. Please refer to the <Bill of
material> to find out which components are needed for the chosen variant.

2.2 [24] Circuit board

[25] With the included Gerber data, it is possible for almost every PCB manufacturer to produce
this board. Please pay attention to the necessary board thickness of 1.55 mm for using the
attached case! The board thickness may vary for alternative cases. Also “Electroless
nickel/immersion gold (ENIG)” plating is recommended, do not use “lead-free HAL”.
[26] Please do not use Chinese circuit board manufacturers, but rely on regional companies in
order to support the local economy. It isn’t as expensive as you might think. Please refer to the
<List of some PCB manufacturer>.

2.3 [27] List of some PCB manufacturer

[28] Since someone asked which local PCB manufacturers could produce the boards, here is a
small selection.

[29] Country [30] Manufacturer [31] Production location

[32] Germany Ätzwerk ???
Beta Layout (aka PCB-POOL) Germany
Fischer Leiterplatten Germany
Würth Elektronik Germany

[33] If you know a PCB manufacturers that manufactures in your country, please tell me and I
will add them to the list.

2.4 [40] Bill of material

[41] The components are sold by most of the major distributors. For some of them, I compiled
the supplier part number. The listed components are only suggestions, some components may
be replaced by similar ones.

2.4.3 [50] Reduced or alternative assembly

[51] The minimum required components are R10 (47 Ω) and CN20 respectively CN30.
[52] R11, R12, R13 and T10 are used to detect, if an SD card is inserted. These components
can be omitted if R10 (47 Ω) is assembled (not recommended).
[53] When using the microSD card slot, it is possible to choose between side or top display. In
both cases R21, R22 and T20 must be assembled. For top display add D20, D21, R20 and R23,
for side display add D30, D31, R30 and R31. It is possible to assemble both circuit parts for top
and side display.

2.5 [54] Case

[55] In contrary to the first prototype this board does not fit into an original Memory Card case.
[56] This adapter is designed for a 3D printed case. The needed STL files can be found in this
package. There are files for the SD card and microSD card variant.
[57] The case is designed for a 400 µm extruder. A layer thickness of 100 µm is recommended.
When using LEDs, transparent filament should be used.

[58] The two parts are screwed together with two M2 pan-head screws with a maximum length
of 6 mm.

3 [60] Development

3.1 [61] Development of your own circuit board

[62] This circuit board was developed with KiCAD. If you need the exact dimensions of the
Memory Card’s board, you’ll find the KiCAD model in this ZIP file to adopt them from in case
you want to build your own. If you use KiCAD too, feel free to use this model.

3.2 [63] Make your own Case

[64] Your want to create your own case? Here you can find the dimensions of the Memory
Card‘s case. The drawings show the front few of the Memory Card.

5 [71] Credits
[72] Many thanks go to wisi and Maximus32, who mainly developed the software for this
project. Thanks to TnA for organizing and Anakin94 for testing and for bringing the project to
my attention. And of course thanks to all others who have been involved in the project.

6 [73] Translation
[74] This document was translated from German into English by <your name>.
Introduction
Send me an unformatted document (*.txt) with all numbered sections. Keep the brackets
(<…>) and insert the translation like in the following headlines.
If you are not sure if your translation is correct, use a online translator (like DeepL) and the
original German document for better orientation.
Please also translate the date, because its format is different in every language. Please note
the order (date, month, year) and the separator ( . - / ). Then I can see how to write the current
date.
Please also note the decimal separator in your language and do not only cope the English
numbers. Nowadays, some people use the dot separator as in English as they are used to is in
English, even if the comma is used in their language.
And last but not least, note the quotation marks that are used in your language. It’s the same
as with the decimal separator.
I’ll additionally compare everything with the information on Wikipedia to avoid mistakes.
