DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

Spring 2020, Lab Manual (PBH101L)

• Experiment name: Measuring Body Mass Index (BMI)

• Introduction or Executive Summary:
BMI or Body Mass Index is a proxy estimate of body fat which is calculated by measuring
body weight and height. Although a proxy indicator, it serves as a useful screening tool as it
can estimate the risk of various non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease,
diabetes and cancer. By measuring the BMI, we can categorize an individual into five groups:
Underweight, Normal, Overweight, Obese and Morbidly Obese.
• Apparatus:
For calculating the BMI, we need the following apparatus:
➢ Weight scale
➢ Height scale (stadiometer)
➢ Calculator
➢ Pen and paper
• Procedure or Methods:
1. Weight is measured using weight machine in kilograms. Make sure the participant is not
wearing excess heavy clothes or shoes.

2. Height is measured in inch/centimeter using stadiometer making sure that the participant is
standing upright, keeping the head straight. Then the unit is converted to meter.

3. BMI is calculated using the formula.

• Findings and Calculation:
[Mention the findings of your measurements, i.e. your measured height and weight. Then
perform the calculation for BMI in detailed steps.]
• Result:
[Mention the result (BMI) with appropriate unit.]
• Interpretation of result with range
[Interpret the BMI in reference to the range provided below. You should provide the chart in
your copy of lab report]

Underweight Normal Overweight Obese Morbidly Obese

<18.5 kg/m2 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 25-29.9 kg/m2 30.0-39.9 kg/m2 >40 kg/m2

• Conclusion/Remarks
[Conclude the report with your own remarks. You can use this section to outline some
lifestyle advice for the person having the BMI.]
