13 Leaves are the food factories of plants. Therefore, all the raw materials must reach the leaf. Water a
present in the soil are absorbed by the roots and transported to the leaves. Carbon dioxide from air i
in through the tiny pores present on the surface of leaves. These pores are surrounded by ‘guard cel
are called stomata.Water and minerals are transported to the leaves by the vessels which run like pip
the root, the stem, the branches and the leaves. They form a continuous path or passage for the nutr
the leaf. They are called vessels. The leaves have a green pigment called chlorophyll. It helps leave
the energy of the sunlight. This energy is used to synthesise (prepare) food from carbon dioxide and

the synthesis of food occurs in the presence of sunlight, it is called photosynthesis (Photo: light; syn
combine). So we find that chlorophyll, sunlight, carbon dioxide and water are necessary to carry ou
of photosynthesis. It is a unique process on the earth. The solar energy is captured by the leaves and
plant in the form of food. Thus, sun is the ultimate source of energy for all living organisms.
i. What are the food factories of plants?

(b) Roots
(c) Stem
(d) None of the above
ii. Leaves contain ……………………………………………………………………… pigment.

(c) carotenoid
(d) Both (a) & (b)
iii. …………………………………………………………………… is the ultimate source of energ
organisms.

iv. How does the leaves capture the sunlight energy?

14 The neural system of all animals is composed of highly specialised cells called neurons which can d
and transmit different kinds of stimuli. The neural organisation is very simple in lower invertebrate
example, in Hydra it is composed of a network of neurons. The neural system is better organised in
a brain is present along with a number of ganglia and neural tissues. The vertebrates have a more de
neural system.
The human neural system is divided into two parts –
 The central neural system (CNS)
 The peripheral neural system (PNS)
The CNS includes the brain and the spinal cord and is the site of information processing and contro
comprises of all the nerves of the body associated with the CNS (brain and spinal cord). The nerve
PNS are of two types: Afferent fibres and Efferent fibres. The afferent nerve fibres transmit impulse
tissues/organs to the CNS and the efferent fibres transmit regulatory impulses from the CNS to the
peripheral tissues/organs.
The PNS is divided into two divisions called somatic neural system and autonomic neural system. T
neural system relays impulses from the CNS to skeletal muscles while the autonomic neural system
impulses from the CNS to the involuntary organs and smooth muscles of the body. The autonomic
is further classified into sympathetic neural system and parasympathetic neural system.
Visceral nervous system is the part of the peripheral nervous system that comprises the whole comp
fibres, ganglia, and plexuses by which impulses travel from the central nervous system to the viscer
viscera to the central nervous system.

nervous system?
