Assignment No. 1 in Module 1

Explain the following briefly.

1. Define energy.
Ability to do work. Ability to exert a force causing displacement of
an object.

2. Differentiate kinetic and potential energy.

Kinetic energy is the energy that an object has because of its
motion, while potential energy are stored energy that is no motion. To
simply explain, when an object is moving on a different location it is
kinetic energy; when an object is not moving in any place it is potential
energy.

3. Enumerate the forms of energy.

a. Chemical energy. Energy that is stored within the connections
(the bonds) between tiny parts of a substance (molecules).
b. Electrical energy. Energy from moving electrons.
c. Radiant energy. Energy associated with the movement of light,
electromagnetic waves or particles.
d. Mechanical energy. Energy possessed by an object due to its
movement or position.
e. Nuclear energy. Energy released when the nuclei of atoms are
split or fused
f. Thermal energy. It is heat energy, or the energy of moving or
vibrating molecules.

4. What do you mean by energy transformation?

When energy change from one form to another. Best to explain
is by giving example; Sun is a nuclear energy that transform or
change to heat and light energy.

5. Describe how light, sound and heat travel.

Light travels as waves. It bounces off certain objects like
concrete, but is able to pass through other objects like glasses. Sound
is an energy that is made by vibration and it creates waves which
move through mediums such air, water and wood. Heat can travel
through conduction, convection and radiation.
