Class Activity 1. Descriptive Measures, Boxplot and the Normal Distribution

September 15, 2023
Due: Today at 11:30 am. Please submit it at the Dean’s Office.

Use your data in assignment 1 on the amount of time spent on social media per day and perform the following:
1. Compute the mean and standard deviation using Excel. Interpret your results.

Ave. Time Spent on Mean = 104.83

Social Media SD = 67.55
(in minutes)
The computed mean shows that the respondents spend an average of 104.83 minutes on
90 social media per day with a standard deviation of 67.55 minutes.

2. Assume that your data follows a normal distribution.

a.) Compute the following intervals:
i.) x ± 1 standard deviation
At 68.2%
104.83 + 67.55 = 172.38
104.83 – 67.55 = 37.28
Thus, the interval is 37.28 – 172.38

ii.) x ± 2 standard deviation

At 95.4 %
104.83 + 2 (67.55) = 239.93
104.83 – 2 (67.55) = - 30.27
Thus, the interval is -30.27 – 239.93.

iii.) x ± 3 standard deviation

At 99.7%
104.83 + 3 (67.55) = 307.48
104.83 - 3 (67.55) = - 97.82
Thus, the interval is -97.82 – 307.48.

b.) Identify how many of the observations are expected to be in each interval in (a).
i.) For the interval 37.28 – 172.38
68.2% x 30 = 20.46 or 20 observations
ii.) For the interval -30.27 – 239.93
95.4% x 30 = 28.62 or 29 observations
iii.) For the interval -97.82 – 307.48
99.7% x 30 = 29.91 = 30 observations

c.) Now we will check if your data closely follows a normal distribution. Sort your data according to the amount of
time spent on social media (be sure to highlight first all your data before you sort them). Then count the actual
number of observations that fall in each interval in (a).
i.) For the interval 37.28 – 172.38, the actual number of observations is 18.
ii.) For the interval -30.27 – 239.93, the actual number of observations is 28.
iii.) For the interval -97.82 – 307.48, the actual number of observations is 30.

d.) Comment on what you observe with your actual count and your answers in (b). Can you say that your data is
close to a normal distribution? Justify your answer.
Based on the comparison between the computed and actual number of observations, there is only a slight
difference of counts. This suggests that the data that I have gathered is close to a normal distribution.

3. Get the data on time spent on social media from one of your classmates. Make sure your unit of measurements
are the same. If not, then convert them. (If yours is in hours, your classmate’s data must also be in hours. If not,
convert it into hours.)

b.) And describe from what groups these data
were taken.

The first set of data was taken from selected elementary and junior high school teachers from Ibn Siena
Integrated School Foundation. The second set of data was taken from the Grade 5 pupils of Ibn Siena
Integrated School Foundation.

c.) Construct a boxplot to compare the two sets of data. Describe what you observe.
