INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The auto industry is entering a new age of innovation, one that will not
only see the age-old combustion engine transform into the electric motor,
but also see the world’s relationship with the automobile change.

Bill Ford

Technology involves manipulation of the environment to meet

human needs such as food, shelter, communication, and health. The
development of various technologies within the last 10,000 years of human
history has been affected by and has affected the environment, human
societies, and science (Badanowski, 2014). According to Evans, 2012
globalization rapidly took place in the society where technology advances
also came in the scenario. In the emergence of these advancements,
changes take place. “Technological transitions describe how these
technological innovations occur and are incorporated into society”.
Further, technology advancement nowadays speeds up due to the demand
of the community and particular in different types of industry that leads
to technology development which affects the entire process of each
industry.

Automotive industry anchored its development through innovative

strategies which technological improvement offered. This leads to
advancement of tools and equipment that in order to uplift the servicing
process of the vehicle. Further, automotive service work requires a great
variety of tools Crouse and Anglin, 2004. The proper tools properly used
enable you to do a job with safety, speed, and efficiency.
2

However, due to technological advancement some small scale

automotive technicians find it hard to acquire the needed tool in order to
conduct the proper way of servicing an automobile. Also, the cost hindered
automotive technicians to acquire tools that fit to the need of the shop.
Due to this account, many technicians conduct servicing using the
conventional way of servicing which sometimes leads to damage of
components.

Servicing automobile especially in overhauling process tools and

equipment are necessary. Lack of tools and equipment will result to a very
poor quality of work. Since overhauling is a delicate job which requires
precision on the task to be done (Rivera and Cuntapay, 2011). In the
process of overhauling and underchasis servicing, bushing, bearing and
engine liner removal are some of the task that needs to be done in order
to recondition the engine in its good performance which makes the task
crucial. Also, according to Hart (1995), liner are typically inserted into hole
in which they are required by way of a press fit. When liner needs to be
replaced, as is common, it can be unduly burdensome to remove the
bushing from the hole in which it is installed. Typically the liner will be
destroyed when removed because of the large amount of force which is
required. This can be applied through hammers and the like and may well
also be damage in the inner surface in which the liner is installed.

To deal with this situation, different innovations and modifications

can be made in order to solve and minimize the impact of the problem. In
the market there are existing technology such as; patent documents
(EP0575170A1; US 5224255; US 5233740A) that offers solution to the
problem. However, available technology is difficult to be acquired by the
small scale technicians and school laboratories due to the cost, efficiency
and usefulness of the tools since some of the tools can only be used for a

single purpose only which requires higher cost. Thus, it has been a
practice that observation and deeper analysis must be done paired with
patent search that bring the idea of the technical problem of difficulty in
removing bearing, bearing and liner in an automobile.

Further, it is therefore multipurpose hydraulic Diesel Engine Liner

remover tool is an object of the innovation to provide a device that may
alleviate the disadvantage of the prior art. This developed technology will
offer new advantage over the existing technology and could provide
convenience in servicing process particularly in removing Diesel Engine
Liner.

Objectives of the Study

This study aimed to achieve the following:

1. Design and fabricate hydraulic diesel engine liner remover.

2. Test for the functionality in terms of its effectiveness, operating

performance and safety.

3. Revise defects found during testing.

4. Determine if the Hydraulic Diesel Engine Liner Remover is

significantly functional.
4

Significance of the Study

This project study aimed to improve the conventional way of

removing diesel engine liner into an effective way of servicing. Also, this
helps the following.

School – offers an avenue for the school to use innovative tool for
laboratory activities.

Student – offers information to understand the servicing procedure using

the appropriate tool

Trainers – offers as an instructional tool for practical activities in the shop.

Researcher – offers information that will serve as related literature

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This project study is only limited to all kinds of diesel engine liner
like, HINO EH700 (six cylinder engine), ISUZU 4BE1, ISUZU 4HF1,
NISSAN (four cylinder engine). Further, this developed technology was
validated through questionnaire by automotive students, instructors,
trainers and industry workers and was treated statistically using T-test.
