Taking Care of Your Instrument

1. C A R E ! Stringed instruments break easily. Repairs can be

expensive. “Bumping,” dropping, stepping on and horseplay can really
cause damage to your instrument.

2. Do not let anyone else play your instrument.

3. When you are not using your instrument, store it in its case.

4. Wipe rosin dust, fingerprints and smudges from your instrument

before placing it in the case.

5. Violins and violas: Take your shoulder pad off the instrument before
placing it in the case.

6. Do not force the case closed.

7. Always check the closures before you pick up your case.

8. Cellos and basses: Take the bow out of the case first when unpacking.
Place the bow in the case last when packing your instrument.

9. Do not store items that do not belong in your case.

10. Too hot or too cold is not good for your instrument. If it is
uncomfortable for you, it is also uncomfortable for your instrument.

11. Do not touch the bow hair.

12. Tighten your bow to play. Loosen it when you put it away.

13. Rosin your bow regularly.

14. Do not repair your own instrument.
