concepts
UNITY-
- Unity is achieved when a composition contains one focused
idea. In a unified text, all the supporting ideas are relevant to
the main thought. Without unity, the text will be confusing.
Examples:
Read the paragraphs below and determine the differences between the two.
1. Computers are essential tools for writers. The use of pen and paper is
also very handy. That is, if someone wanted to write about anything,
anywhere. But computers provide writers efficient means for revising
their works. Because computers allow text to be easily changed and
moved. Hence, computers are more efficient for revisions.

“My favorite color is blue. Blue sports cars go very fast. Driving in this way is
dangerous and can cause many car crashes. I had a car accident once and
broke my leg. I was very sad because I had to miss a holiday in Europe
because of the injury.

COHERENCE
- is defined as the quality of being logical, consistent, and able
to be understood.
- Means the connection and organization of ideas in a text to
create unity.
- to achieve coherence, every good paragraph must have unity
or oneness of ideas. Sentences in a paragraph are unified and
directed by a topic sentence.
COHESION
- on the other hand refers to the act of forming a whole unit. It
is the glue that holds a piece of writing together.
- To achieve cohesion, you need to know how to use cohesive
devices, certain words or phrases that serve the purpose of
connecting two statements, usually by referring back to what
you have previously written or said.

COHESIVE DEVICES/TRANSITIONAL DEVICES

 Pronouns

Ex. Myra awarded as the employee of the month because

she was responsible in her job.
 Conjunctions
Ex. Myka and Lara will be attending my party.

 Repetition

Ex. The problem with contemporary art is that it is not

easily understood by most people. contemporary art is
deliberately abstract, and that means it leaves the viewer
wondering what she is looking at.

 Synonym (substitution)
Ex. There was a lot of food, but she only ate the bread.

Some examples of transitional devices

To summarize, coherence refers to how the ideas of the text flow

logically and make a text semantically meaningful as a whole.
Cohesion is what makes the elements (e.g. the words, phrases,
clauses, and sentences) of a text stick together to form a whole.
Example:
Cohesive but not coherent: “My favorite color is blue. Blue sports cars go very
fast. Driving in this way is dangerous and can cause many car crashes. I had a
car accident once and broke my leg. I was very sad because I had to miss a
holiday in Europe because of the injury.

Coherent and cohesive: “My favorite color is blue. I like it because it is

calming, and it relaxes me. I often go outside in the summer and lie of the
grass and look into the clear sky when I am stressed. For this reason, I’d have
to say my favorite color is blue. “

The house is normal Malaysian house. My house is smaller than my neighbor.
We can say it is near the sea. It takes about 10 minutes to go to the seaside on
foot. We have one bedroom, one living room. We also have two other rooms,
too. We use them as a dining room. Naturally, we have a kitchen, a bathroom,
and a toilet. I live with my parents. Our house has a little garden; my parents
spend their time there to grow vegetables and fruit.
