Academic stress : It is a significant source of stress for many students , covering not only
examinations but also other academically related stressors such as fear of logging behind in
the homework, writing assignment, working on individual and group projects, time pressure,
lack of financial support, concern about academic ability, scheduling classes and required
motivation to study . For many students, the pursuit of higher education is a time of transition
marked by a set of demands specific to the setting. Academic stress can be defined as a
resources which leads to conflict and frustration thus causing psychological and physiological

There are many researches have been done in the area of academic stress and its associated
fields. Hence the researcher took again an initiative to cover few of the remaining associated
aspects to academic stress that are taken for consideration. In the Indian society achievement
of the academics is the biggest indicator of the intelligence and also the indicator used to
judge the individual . Various research has also suggested that human being can excel at any
point of life and can live a healthy life by emphacising and enhancing positive resources or
capacities. Positive elements can play an important role in students life too. Students are
viewed as leaders of tomorrow. They have academic achievement as their major role and
need good mental health to be succeed in their academic pursuit. One important construct in
life of students is anxiety & locus of control. Researches shows that family environment and
self esteem are not only important for their academics and social adjustments but for their
overall adjustments and wellness. Thus the main aim of the study is to determine the
academic stress, family environment and self esteem students . Hence the findings of the
study has implications for enhancing our knowledge in understanding the dynamics of
academic stress, family environment and self esteem adolescents students themselves. This

Methodology
Methodology is the backbone of any research endeavour. It is the blueprint used by the
researcher to examine and explore the variables of interest. It plays a leading role in carrying
out the research study systematically and objectively. Methodology refers to systematic
research and planning. Scientific investigation involves careful and proper adaptation of
research design, use of standardized tools and tests, sampling techniques, sound procedures
for collecting data, its careful study and tabulation and then, finally application of appropriate
statistical tests. These steps basically enhance the predictive value of findings; thus, the
findings may be generalized to predict the behaviour of the population from which the sample
has been drawn. Following methodology will be used for present study.

Academic stress scale : Academic Stress Scale (Rajendran & Kaliappan, 1990) The
Academic Stress Scale is 40 items rating scale that was developed with the sole purpose of
identifying academic stress among students. The Indian adaptation of the initial scale which
was done by Kim (1970) was done by Rajendran and Kaliappan in 1990. They assessed 400
subjects using the scale. There are 40 items on the scale and are classified into five areas with

Scoring: The Family environment scale is scored according to the positive and negative
scores. Positive scores are scored with “5”, “4”, “3”, “2”, and “1” for “Strongly agree”,
“Agree”, “Neutral”, “Disagree” and “Strongly Disagree” respectively and the negative scores
are scored with “1”, “2”, “3”, “4” and “5” for “Strongly agree”, “Agree”, “Neutral”,
Reliability of the Test : The Split-half reliability was found for the scale. The scale was split
into two halves along with the scores of each dimension. The correlation was done on each of
the scores for each of the dimensions. The reliability coefficient was estimated on the whole
test using the Spearman-Brown Prophecy formula. The reliability coefficient are cohesion-
0.92, expressiveness- 0.88, conflict- 0.84, acceptance and caring- 0.86, independence-0.70,
active –recreational Orientation- 0.48, Organization- 0.75 and Control- 0.48. The overall test
Validity of the Test Face validity and content validity were tested by eighteen experts who
were given the test to evaluate the test items. Items with 75 percent agreement among the
