Series Exam 1
IInd Semester
EST 100 - ENGINEERING MECHANICS
ME 2K23

Total Mark: 50 Total Time: 1 Hrs : 30 Mins

Course Outcome (CO)

CO1 Recall principles and theorems related to rigid body mechanics
CO2 Identify and describe the components of system of forces acting on the rigid body
CO3 Apply the conditions of equilibrium to various practical problems involving different force system.
CO4 Choose appropriate theorems, principles or formulae to solve problems of mechanics.
CO5 Solve problems involving rigid bodies, applying the properties of distributed areas and masses

PART A

No. Questions Marks CO

1. State and explain principle of transmissibility. 3 CO1

2. Define Free Body Diagram. Draw FBD of the spherical ball resting on a floor 3 CO2
and is supported at the vertical wall as shown in FIG 1.

FIG.1

3. State and explain Lami’s theorem 3 CO1

4. A body of weight 1000 N is kept on a horizontal rough surface. Coefficient of 3 CO2

static friction is 0.2 and the coefficient of dynamic friction is 0.18. Calculate the
frictional force when the applied force P as 300 N.
5. What is meant by cone of friction? Explain it with neat figure. 3 CO1

PART B

No. Questions Marks CO

6. a) Two cables AC and BC are tied together at a point C to support a load of 500N 8 CO3,CO4,CO5
at C. A and B are at a distance of 1.3m and are on the same horizontal plane. AC
and BC are at 1.2m and 0.5m respectively. Find the tension in the cables AC &
BC.

6. b) Concurrent forces of 1N,3N,5N,7N,9N,11N are applied to the centre of a 6 CO3,CO4,CO5
regular hexagon acting towards its vertices as shown in figure. Determine the
magnitude and direction of the resultant.

7. Three cylinders are piled up in a rectangular channel as shown in figure. 14 CO3,CO4,CO5
Determine the reaction R6 between the cylinder A and the vertical wall of the
channel. Weight of the cylinders A, B and C are 15kg, 40kg, and 20kg and the
radius of the cylinders A, B and C are 4cm, 6cm and 5cm respectively.

FIG.3

8. a) Explain the laws of friction. 4 CO1

8. b) A force of 500N is required just to move a body up an inclined plane of angle 20 10 CO3,CO4,CO5
degrees when the force is applied parallel to the plane. When the inclination of
the plane is made 30 degrees, the force required, again parallel to the plane is
found to be 580N. Find the weight of the body and coefficient of friction.
OR
9. A uniform ladder 5m long, weighing 250 N is placed against a smooth wall with 14 CO3,CO4,CO5
its lower end 2m from the wall. The coefficient of friction between the ladder
and the floor is 0.25. Show that the ladder remains in equilibrium in this
position.
10. Find the resultant of the force system shown in FIG 4. 7 CO3,CO4,CO5
