Workshop Practice (GE102)

Reference manual for the experiment on Lathe

● Experiment title: To perform Lathe operation like Step Turning, Facing, Taper
Turning and Drilling and make the part shown in the sketch from an aluminum rod
on a Lathe for the given work piece.

● Objective(s): To understand basic of lathe like parts name and function, different
technical terminology and various lathe operations.

● Introduction: Lathe removes undesired material from a rotating work piece in the
form of chips with the help of a tool which is traversed across the work and can be
fed deep in work. The tool material should be harder than the work piece and the
later help securely and rigidly on the machine. A lathe is a machining tool that is
used primarily for shaping metal or wood. It works by rotating the workpiece
around a stationary cutting tool. The main use is to remove unwanted parts of the
material, leaving behind a nicely shaped workpiece

● Material and apparatus required:

(1) Lathe
(2) Aluminum specimen with diameter 25 mm and length 100 mm
(3) Cutting tool required (Single point HSS/Carbide plane turning tool,
Combination center/pilot drill, sets of drill tools etc.)
(4) Measuring device (Vernier caliper, Steel rule etc.)
(5) Tool kit (Chuck key, Tool post key, Tail stock fixing key, packing for centering of
tool, brush, hand saw, oil can, drill chuck etc.)

● Method:
1. The work piece is fixed in a 3 – jaw chuck with sufficient overhang (Approximate
120 mm overhang).
2. Fix the HSS/Carbide tool in the tool post and adjust it in center.
3. Sat the RPM (250 to 500) by the hand lever and switch on the machine.
4. Facing is performed by giving longitudinal depth of cut and cross feed and make
sure that the tool is in center.
5. Perform plain turning operation until the diameter of the work piece reduced to
24 mm and length up to 95 mm.
6. Perform step turning operation until the diameter of the work piece reduced to
20 mm and length up to 55 mm.
7. To sat compound slide 9.1 deg angle for taper turning operation up to 25 mm
length. (For taper angle tan θ=D-d/2L)
8. Fix the tail stock and hold the drill chuck with drill bit and perform drilling
operations up to length 15 mm.
9. Perform parting-off operation kipping overall length 90mm.
10. Un-hold the work piece and perform taping operation manually.
11. Clean the workstation (Machine) properly.

● Precautions:
(1) Chuck key must remove from the chuck before switch on the machine.
(2) Must wear proper safety shoes, goggles and apron.
(3) Follow proper safety protocol during the machining operation.
(4) Do not operate the machine without the presence of the technical staff or TA.
(5) Make sure tool and work piece are fixed tightly.
(6) Chips should not be allowed to wind around a revolving job and cleared as often
as possible.
(7) No attempt should be made to clean the revolving job.
(8) Do not touch the chips with bare hands.
(9) On hearing unusual noise, machine should be stopped.

● Difficulties that may arise

(Write the technical difficulties that you think may arise during the experiment)
● Conclusion
(What new knowledge(s) one can learn by doing this experiment.
How this experiment relates your daily life, write one or two sentences.)
Write about various lathe operations.
