Time: During the 14th century

Place: Verona in Italy

We don't know why these two families are fighting

Lord and Lady are the Parents of the house.

Ex: Lord and Lady Capulat are the parents of Julia Capulat

Charecters:
-Juliet Capulat
-Romeo Montogue
-Benvolio Montogue (Romeo's Cousin)

Scene 1

As the scene opens, two young Capulat servants happen to meet servants from the
rival house of Montague. A quarrel begins that grows into an ugly street fight.
The fight started because the Capulat servants were biting their thumbs to the
servants of Montague.(In Italian culture biting your thumb is a sign of disrespect)
Finally the ruler of Verona, Prince Escalus, appears. He is angry about the
violence in his city warns that the next offenders will recieve a death penalty. He
says
that the two lords are responsible and in charge of stopping and fight. The crowd
fades away.

The lord and lady of Montague have started talking to Benvolio since they have
noticed that romeo is acting strange.
He would run away to the forest crying and then come back very late only to lock
himself in his room.
We learn that a girl called Rosaline has rejected Romeo's love she told him to "Try
to find other Beauties".
To which Romeo replied with "I am sick loving you, I have been hit with one of
cupid's arrows" (Refrence to the roman god of love and desire)
Rosaline refrences to Diana the roman goddess of the wild, hunting, and Chastisty.
she was always secluded . Diana was also the only Roman god to be able to
refuse cupid's love.

Allusion: Roman mythology

Why did Rosaline reject Romeo?

Rosaline rejected Romeo because she had chosen to become a nun and had taken a vow
of chastity, which means she could not reciprocate Romeo's feelings1.
Romeo's unrequited love for Rosaline caused him a great deal of sorrow and fueled
his decision to attend the Capulet party where he met Juliet,
leading to the tragic events that followed1. In the original Shakespeare, Rosaline
only serves as a plot device, the impetus for his and Juliet's doomed fate.

Scene 2

This scence opens with Count Paris, a young nobleman, asking Lord Capulat for
permission to marry his daughter Juliet. Lord Capulat says that Juliet is too
young.
He thinks that they can wait for another 2 years, but Paris says younger girls have
already got children so Lord Capulat told him to try to win her heart.
Lord Capulat told him that they are having a party today. "Come court her" Lord
Capulat said.

A servant from Capulat was walkinng in streets trying to read something, but
because he cannot read, he approached Romeo asking him if he can read. The list
had alll the names invited to the party in the Capulat house tonight. Romeo found
out that Rosaline was attending the party.

In good time: A sentance said by the servant from the Capulat house upon seeing
Romeo coming it means what luck
( A refrence to the arrival of Romeo and Benovolio) who will be able to help the
servant read the list.
