The ADS family of hoisting systems represents the


next step in Varco's strategy to continuously advance
the efficiency, productivity and safety of the drilling 500,000

Over twenty years ago, Varco engineers began
addressing the safety and efficiency issues created by
the movement of tubulars from the pipe deck to well
center. The Varco Iron Roughneck was to become the
first in a long series of proven pipe-handling products.
Each has been designed to provide “hands-off” tubular
handling at well center by automating the making and
breaking of connections.
The Varco Automated Iron Roughneck AR3200 includes
the latest advancements in automated pipe handling.
At the touch of a button, the unit automatically moves
along its tracks to the tool joint, spins in and makes-up,
or breaks-out and spins out the connection, and then
moves back to its home position.
The Varco AR4500 incorporates the technological inno-
vations of its predecessors while adding additional fea-
tures required on large offshore rigs. Incorporation of a AR4500
variable elevation spinning wrench and an integrated
Mud Bucket allows handling of many types of tubulars
such as fluted drill collars, stabilizers, crossover subs,
downhole motor sleeves, MWD tools and tri-cone and
diamond-type drill bits.
The AR5000, using the features of the AR4500, incor-
porates a modular design that allows the Spintorq mod-
ule to be removed from the carriage and replaced with
other modules such as one for a 10 3/4” or 20” casing
module.

The CRT 14 is installed onto the shaft of the Top Drive

and circulation through the casing string, the CRT 14
reduces the probability of stuck casing. The tool also
has the ability to push casing into the well with 40,000
lbs force allowing for stripping-in during underbal-

board, maintains proper alignment during stabbing
and make-up of casing, adds the ability for soft stab-

Purposely designed, the fill-up tool allows for fast
change-out of seal and guide elements when running
mixed strings. The seals on the fill-up tool prevent
spillage of expensive drilling fluids reducing the chance
of environmental incidents.
