Q01. Find the mean deviation about the mean of the distribution:
Size Frequency
20 6
21 4
22 5
23 1
24 4
Q02. Find the mean deviation about the median of the following distribution:
Marks obtained Number of students
10 2
11 3
12 8
14 3
15 4
Q05 There are 60 students in a class. The following is the frequency distribution of the marks obtained by the
students in a test:
Marks Frequency
0 x–2
1 x
2 x2
3 (x + 1) 2
4 2x
5 x +1
where x is a positive integer. Determine x and the means and standard deviation of the marks.
Q07 The mean life of a sample of 60 bulbs was 650 hours and the standard deviation was 8 hours.
A second sample of 80 bulbs has a mean life of 660 hours and standard deviation 7 hours. Find the overall
standard deviation.
Q08. If for distribution (x – 5) = 3, (x – 5) 2 = 43 and total number of items is 18, find the mean and standard
deviation.
Q09. While calculating the mean and variance of 10 readings, a student wrongly used the reading 52 for the
correct reading 25. He obtained the mean and variance as 45 and 16 respectively. Find the correct mean and
the variance.
Q10 Mean and standard deviation of 100 observations were found to be 40 and 10, respectively. If at the time of
calculation two observations were wrongly taken as 30 and 70 in place of 3 and 27 respectively, find the correct
standard deviation.
Q11. The mean and standard deviation of 20 observations are found to be 10 and 2 respectively. On
rechecking, it was found that an observation 8 was incorrect. Calculate the correct mean and standard
deviation in each of the following cases: (i) If the wrong item is omitted. (ii) If it is replaced by 12.
