A pattern by Kyle Vey

In collaboration with Blue Brick Yarns

ABOUT THIS PATTERN
Thank you for checking out the Wingspan pattern! Designed
with Blue Brick yarn, this work stands at the intersection of
knitting and nature. The shawl is as light and elegant as it is
regal and powerful, drawing inspiration from the wings of a
bird. This symmetrical pattern can be a bit of a tedious knit,
but the rewards are absolutely worth it. Wingspan combines
intermediate-level knitting techniques, such as increases,
decreases, cables, and short-rows to give it the look and feel
of feathers. Whether you are knitting it for yourself, a friend,
or a family member, the future recipient is bound to love it!

DIMENSIONS
Maximum wingspan: 70 in / 178 cm
Depth of wing: 17 in / 43 cm

YARN
This pattern calls for 800 yards of fingering-weight yarn. The
sample shown was knit with 1 skein of Blue Brick Manitoulin
Merino Sparkle Wooly Mammoth in Ibis, part of the Aviary
collection (800 yds / 731 m, 200 gr, fingering-weight).
Check out the rest of the amazing Blue Brick collection on their
website.

NEEDLES
3.25 mm (US 3) circular needles (40” or larger
recommended), 4.5 mm (US 7) straight or circular for bind-off Beginning at the neck, short-rows are used to lengthen the
shawl on either side, while a tight linen-stitch section keeps

‘INTUITION’ INSTRUCTIONS
My goal with these instructions is to help you understand how the shawl is constructed so that you can avoid using some of the
lengthy written instructions if you choose. In order to achieve this, I will walk you through the key construction aspects.

Feathers
The body of each feather follows the same basic format shown here. Note that the width of the feather depends on how many
stitches X and Y are knit between the increases (M1R and M1L) and decreases (K2T and SSK). The number of stitches on the
short side of each feather (Y) stays relatively constant. As you knit your shawl, you will mostly be increasing the number of
stitches on the longer side of each feather (X). On every wrong-side row, the edge stitches for each feather (i.e., the decreases)
will be slipped, and all stitches between them will be purled. Note that if you want to swatch you work, this is the basic pattern
you should use.

Wing Shape
For the time being, think of the shape of each wing as a crescent. In order to obtain this shape, increases occur radially. Instead
of increasing at the edges of the shawl, you’ll be increasing the width of the feathers during specified rows. You will only ever
be increasing the width of a feather by one stitch at a time (e.g., from 9 sts to 10). Note that in the previous section each increase
(M1R and M1L) was paired with a decrease (K2T and SSK, respectively). This kept the size of each feather constant. In order to
increase the width of a feather, you’ll simply be performing a double-increase (M2R or M2L). This will always be done on the
longer side of the feather (i.e., only X will increase). The table on the next page specifies in which rows and which feathers these
increases occur.

Short Rows
Short rows are what gives the wings horizontal length while the middle of the shawl remains relatively narrow. If you have never
worked with short rows before, I recommend looking up a YouTube video on the technique. Instructions regarding the simple
wrap-and-turn are included in the abbreviations section of this pattern. Each feather is separated by a reverse stockinette
column (i.e. P1 on RS and K1 on WS). The wrap-and-turn will always be performed around this stitch. The diagram below
indicates the direction of knitting for the short rows where the purple boxes represent the feathers grouped into Sets. In th is
case, two feathers are shown in each Set; however, the number of feathers in each Set increases as you knit the shawl and the
overall number of feathers increase. But the same short row technique applies. You will first knit all the way across Sets 1-6.
Then you will knit short rows across Sets 6 and 5 and back, then Set 6 and back again. You will then knit all the way from Set 6
to 1, then perform mirroring short rows on that side: across Sets 1 and 2 and back, then across Set 1 and back, ending where
you began.

All text © 2019 Kyle Vey, all images © 2019 Shireen Nadir of The Blue Brick. 14
Important note: If you are instructed to perform any increases to the width of a feather (i.e. a double increase) in the outline
below, you should do it the 1st time you knit that feather when you knit from Set 1 to 6.

Outline
Now that we’ve covered the major construction techniques, I’ll give you the outline of the pattern in tabular format. I
recommend that after casting on, setting up, and knitting a few rows in Section A (or perhaps waiting until Section B), see if
you can recognize the pattern of how the wings are forming and use the table below to guide you. For Sections A, C, E, and G,
the number of stitches to knit between the edges of the feathers have been provided by row number. Each row in the outline
below corresponds to one collection of short rows discussed in the previous section. An “x” in the M2R or M2L column
indicates a double increase will be performed during the first row. You’ll notice that these increases are fairly distributed. This
is what gives the wings their radial pattern.
The “Set” columns refer to the groupings of feathers that separate the short rows, and the number of feathers included in
each set for each section are shown just below the corresponding instructions. For example, when knitting in Section C, you
will be working with 7 feathers on either side of the shawl. Your wrap-and-turns will occur on the reverse stockinette column
between the “Sets” shown below. Feel free to refer to the corresponding rows in the written instructions for additional details.
An optional tracking column has been included if you wish to track your progress. Please note that for Cast-on, Set-up,
Sections B, D, F, H, and I, you should still refer to the written instructions.

Again, I know this method is not for everyone, but I did want to have some additional option for knitters to use beyond the
lengthy written instructions. A chart for this pattern was not doable given the radial increases of the wings. Ultimately, I want
you to enjoy this pattern, so use whatever method you prefer! If you do have any questions about this method, please feel free
to reach out to me.
