Statement:
Cafe lulu has 2 specialty items (poppy seed muffins and a lemon bread slice)
that they sell everyday each day. But each day they have some constraints to
making these items. One of the biggest constraints they have is time. They will have
25 hours to prepare as many batches of each to make the most profit but in that
time they also have to keep in mind to only use $150 worth of supplies. And they all
have to think about how much space they have to store all the batches they make.
Each batch of muffins and bread take up ½ of a self. They have 15 selfs in the cafe to
display their items. Keeping these constraints in mind we have to figure out the
best way to make the most amount of profit in these time restraints.

Question:
Each day what is the best combination of these constraints to make cafe lulu
the most amount of profit.

Constraints:
Time - It takes 0.5 hours to make one batch of muffins and takes 1 hour to make 1
batch of bread and you will have a total of 25 hour limit.
Budget - It takes $4.83 to make a batch of muffins and $4.37 for a loaf of lemon
bread, you will have a $150 limit.
Storage - The cafe has 15 shelf’s to put baked goods to sell and each batch of
muffins and bread it takes up ½ of a self.

Price:
Lemon bread loaf - Costs $4.37 for each batch and each batch makes 9 slices of
bread, each slice cost $0.48 to make
Almond Muffins - Costs $4.83 for each batch and each batch makes 12 muffins,
each muffin costs $0.40 to make.

Process and Solution:

Step 1: Organizing all information into a spreadsheet to figure out our prices per batch and
item.

Step 2: Wright constraints as inequalities.

Step 3: Write your profit equation.
Equation: cost per item - sell price = profit

Item Cost per Item Sell Price Profit

Poppy Seed Muffins 0.40 2.42 2.02

Lemon Bread Loaf 0.48 2.91 2.43

Step 4: Graph your feasible region

Step 5: Test your best solution and find max height
- The best solution for this would be to make 10 muffins and 20 pieces of lemon loaf
and we would make the most amount of profit.

Poppy Seed Muffins Lemon Bread Loaf Total

10 20 68.8

0 25 60.75

30 0 60.6

Reflection
In what ways has the cookies project helped you gain perspective on doing real
world mathematics?
Throughout this project I have gained a bigger perspective of doing real world math
by seeing the cost of things I make in bulk and can see how much one of them costs, to see
what I can make if I sell it. This has helped me realize how to have a good profit from
selling a certain item. Learning how to do this made me realize that if I make something I
can figure out the cost and see if I want to sell it and have a good profit from that item I
sell. This project has been really fun for me because I like to bake and make sweets and pick
out recipes that I have made and see what it actually costs for me to make. Seeing this
helps me realize math is important and I can use it in the future if I decide to work at a
bakery or sell my baked goods and figure out how much profit I will get even if I put in
constraints to see how much I can make in Just one day. With really baked goods that I
make.
