KARONGA DRY SPELL SUMMARY REPORT

INTRODUCTION
´ Located in the northern region with a population of 365,028.

´ The district has 5 TAs namely; Mwakaboko, Kilupula, Kyungu, Lupembe, Mwirang’ombe
and Wasambo.

´ It has six Extension Planning Areas (EPAs) for administrative purposes namely
´ Kaporo North,
´ Kaporo South,
´ Lupembe,
´ Mpata,
´ Nyungwe and Vinthukutu.
INTRODUCTION
´ Currently it has a total of 67,551 farming households distributed as follows:
´ (1) kaporo North (11,110); (2) Kaporo South (10,428);
´ (3) Lupembe (7,711); (4) Mpata (15,551); (5) Nyungwe (8,220); and (6) Vinthukutu (14,531).

´ The dry spell has affected about 38,605 farming households.

´ 8,742 hectares of maize with 29,718 farming households.

´ Rice has a total of 10,752 hectares affected, with a total of 8,887 farming families affected. (Kaporo
North, Kaporo South and Mpata EPAs).

´ 1444 hectares of grounds nuts with 4413 farming households being affected, and

´ 59 hectares of burley tobacco for 219 farming households


IMPACT ON HOUSEHOLDS FOOD SECURITY

´ Reduced food consumption among household members.

´ Loss of income and income generation opportunities

´ Increasing prices on staple foods


RESPONSE THUS FAR
´ DoDMA (Government) distributed a once off relief maize in the month of
March to 38,605 households across the district.

´ Pamoza Foundation (Local NGO) distributed relief maize, cooking oil,


beans and salt to 85 households of TA Wasambo.

´ Other potential responders Lusubilo (Local NGO) Intends to support in


Kilupula and Mwirang'ombe with where they will provide maize seed, rice
seed and relief maize.
SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS

´ Provision of drought resistance crops such as sweet potatoes, cassava


and banana in short term.

´ Provision of inputs for winter cropping such as Maize, groundnuts, beans


in long term

´ Food or cash distribution targeting the most affected households.

´ Routine malnutrition screening through MUAC
