Course Code: MEP251

3rd Level Mechatronics Eng. Prog.
Tanta University Mid Term Exam: 20 Marks Faculty of Engineering

Time Allowed: 1 hour (May 30,2021) Mechatronics Program

Please answer the following questions:

Q1: Define the following with simple sketch if possible:

 Span  Repeatability
 Sensitivity  Dead band
 Hysteresis Error  Settling time
Q2: What is the purpose of a potentiometer? Discuss, with the help of schematic drawing,
the working principle of it.

Q3: What is the purpose of an encoder? What are its types? Discuss, with the help of
schematic drawing, the working principle of the incremental type.

Q4: It is required to measure the fuel level within the automobile fuel tank. Suggest the
suitable displacement sensor and discuss with the help of schematic drawing the developed
mechanism used to measure the fuel level.

Q5: A potentiometer is used to detect the linear movement of a table. Given supply volt
is 10 V, total displacement range is 500 mm, the potentiometer resistance is 10 kΩ and
the load resistance is 2 kΩ.
a) If load voltage is 3 volts, calculate the displacement of the table?
b) If the displacement of the table is 120 mm, what will be the load voltage?
c) Determine the resolution of the potentiometer (in mV/mm)?

Q6: A 1440 pulse per revolution incremental encoder outputs and 1152 Hz square wave
from phase A. How fast is the encoder shaft turning in rpm?
