1. GOT IT! [15 MIN]

Basic standard:

𝒇𝒇(𝒙𝒙) = 𝒂𝒂𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 + 𝒒𝒒
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥): − represents the 𝑦𝑦 − value
𝑎𝑎: − indicates if the function is positive or negative

𝑥𝑥 2 : − represents the 2 𝑥𝑥 − 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖

𝑞𝑞: − represents the 𝑦𝑦 − 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖
− indicates whether the function will move up or down
− indicates the turning point of the function
− indicates whether the function has maximum or minimum value
Parabolic function.

Drawing of a Parabolic function.

𝒇𝒇(𝒙𝒙) = 𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 − 𝟒𝟒
𝑦𝑦 − 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖; 𝑥𝑥 = 0 𝑥𝑥 − 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖; 𝑦𝑦 = 0
𝑦𝑦 = (0)2 − 4 0 = 𝑥𝑥 2 − 4
= −4 0 = (𝑥𝑥 + 2)(𝑥𝑥 − 2)
(0; −4) 𝑥𝑥 + 2 = 0 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑥𝑥 − 2 = 0
𝑥𝑥 = −2 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑥𝑥 = 2
(−2; 0) 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 (2; 0)

Important information about the function.

𝒂𝒂 > 0 Turning point(0; −4)

This indicates that the The turning point indicates when the
Domain:
function is positive. function changes direction.
𝑥𝑥 ∈ (−∞; ∞)
It will have a minimum 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) > 0 when 𝑥𝑥 > 2 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑥𝑥 < −2
value 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) < 0 when−2 < 𝑥𝑥 < 2
Range:
𝒒𝒒 = −𝟒𝟒 𝑦𝑦 ∈ (−4; ∞)
Symmetry line 𝒚𝒚 = 𝟎𝟎
This indicates that the
function has moved 4 Indicates where the function is divided
units down from the in half.
original function 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑥𝑥 2
Determine the equation of a Parabolic function

𝒇𝒇(𝒙𝒙) = 𝒂𝒂𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 + 𝒒𝒒
Given: The turning point and a coordinate.

(4; −12)

(0; −16)

Step 1: Substitute the turning point (0; −16)

𝑦𝑦 = 𝑎𝑎𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑞𝑞

𝑦𝑦 = 𝑎𝑎𝑥𝑥 2 − 16

Step 2: Substitute the given coordinates (4; −12)

𝑦𝑦 = 𝑎𝑎𝑥𝑥 2 − 16
−12 = 𝑎𝑎(4)2 − 16

−12 = 16𝑎𝑎 − 16
−12 + 16 = 16𝑎𝑎
4 = 16𝑎𝑎
4
= 𝑎𝑎
16
1
= 𝑎𝑎

Step 3: Substitute 𝑎𝑎 in to the equation.

𝟏𝟏 𝟐𝟐
𝒇𝒇(𝒙𝒙) = 𝒙𝒙 − 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏

Determine the equation of a Parabolic function

𝒇𝒇(𝒙𝒙) = 𝒂𝒂𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 + 𝒒𝒒
Given: 𝒙𝒙 − 𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊𝒊 and a coordinate.

Then we use the following formula

𝒇𝒇(𝒙𝒙) = 𝒂𝒂(𝒙𝒙 − 𝒙𝒙𝟏𝟏 )(𝒙𝒙 − 𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 )

(−5; 0) (5; 0)

(−3; −16)

Step 1: Substitute the 𝑥𝑥 − 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖(−5; 0) 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 (5; 0)

𝑦𝑦 = 𝑎𝑎(𝑥𝑥 − 𝑥𝑥1 )(𝑥𝑥 − 𝑥𝑥2 )

𝑦𝑦 = 𝑎𝑎(𝑥𝑥 − (−5))(𝑥𝑥 − 5)
𝑦𝑦 = 𝑎𝑎(𝑥𝑥 + 5)(𝑥𝑥 − 5)

Step 2: Substitute the given coordinates (−3; −16)

−16 = 𝑎𝑎(−3 + 5)(−3 − 5)

−16 = 𝑎𝑎(2)(−8)
−16 = −16𝑎𝑎
−16
= 𝑎𝑎
−16
1 = 𝑎𝑎

Step 3: Substitute 𝑎𝑎 in to the equation.

𝑦𝑦 = 𝑎𝑎(𝑥𝑥 + 5)(𝑥𝑥 − 5)
𝑦𝑦 = 1(𝑥𝑥 + 5)(𝑥𝑥 − 5) Equation
𝑦𝑦 = 1(𝑥𝑥 2 − 25) 𝒇𝒇(𝒙𝒙) = 𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 − 𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐
𝑦𝑦 = 𝑥𝑥 2 − 25
