The Charter of the UN

The Charter of the UN is the treaty that


forms and establishes the international
organization called United Nations.

It was signed on 26, June 1945, in San


Francisco , at the conclusion of the
United Nations Conference on
International Organization, and came
into force on 24 October 1945

Purposes of the Charter

• To take effective measures for the prevention


and removal of threats to the peace.

• To develop friendly relations among nations


based on respect for the principle of equal
rights and self-determination of peoples.

Purposes of the Charter

• To achieve international co-operation in solving


international problems of an economic, social,
cultural, or humanitarian character, and in
promoting and encouraging respect for human
rights and for fundamental freedom for all
without distinctions as to race, sex, language, or
religion.

• All member states have sovereign equality.


• All member states must obey the charter.
• Countries must try to settle their differences by
peaceful means.

• Countries must avoid using force or threatening


to use force.
• The UN may not interfere in the domestic affairs
of any country.
• Countries should try to assist the United Nations.

• main deliberative organ of the United Nation.


• composed of representatives from all member
states, each of which can vote.

Secretariat

• consisting of staff representing all nationalities


working in duty stations all over the world.
• The Secretariat services the other principal
organs of the United Nations and administers
the programs and policies established by them.

Security Council

• primary responsibility for the maintenance of


international peace and security.

• It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote.

• All Member States are obligated to comply with


Council decision.

International Court of Justice

• principal judicial organ of the United Nations.


• settling legal disputes between States and
giving advisory opinions to the United Nations
and its specialized agencies

Economic and Social Council

• A founding UN Charter body established in


1946, the Economic and Social Council
(ECOSOC) is the place where the world’s
economic, social and environmental challenges
are discussed and debated, and policy
recommendations issued.

Trusteeship Council

• The Trusteeship Council was established to


provide international supervision for 11 Trust
Territories and to make sure that adequate
steps were taken to prepare the Territories for
self-government or independence.
