Introduction

One of the greatest writer in modern


Literature, Bengali poet, novelist, educator,
and an early advocate of Independence for
India .

Tagore won the Nobel prize for literature in


1913.

After two years he was awarded the


knighthood ,but he surrendered it in 1919 as a
protest against the massacre of Amritsar,
where British troops killed some 400 Indian
demonstrators .
Rabindranath Tagore's Early Life &
Education:

Rabindranath Tagore was born in Kolkata into


a healthy and prominent Brahmin family

His father was Maharishi Devendra Nath


Tagore , a religious reformer and scholar.

His mother , Sharda Devi died when Tagore


was very young.
Education: He received his early education at
home under private tutors, where he learned
various subjects like literature, history, and
music. Tagore didn't go to regular school like
most children.

Early Influences: Growing up, Tagore was


surrounded by music, poetry, and art. He was
deeply influenced by his father, who was a
writer and philosopher, and his mother, who
was a strong supporter of his education and
creativity. These early influences shaped his
love for literature and the arts.

At University College , London, he studied law but


left after a year- he did not like the weather.

Rabindranath Tagore was a prolific writer, poet,


and playwright who made significant
contributions to Bengali and world literature.

He wrote in various genres, including poetry,


short stories, novels, essays, and plays.
NOTABLE WORKS

"Gitanjali" (Song Offerings): A collection of


poems for which Tagore was awarded the
Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. It reflects his
spiritual quest and deep connection with
nature.

"Chokher Bali" (A Grain of Sand): A novel


exploring themes of love, betrayal, and societal
norms in 19th-century Bengal.
"Gora": A novel addressing issues of identity,
nationalism, and social reform.

"Kabuliwala": A short story highlighting the


bond between an Afghan trader and a young
girl in Kolkata, reflecting Tagore's empathy
and understanding of human relationships.
Contribution : Music and Art

Besides writing, Tagore was also a talented musician


and composer.

He wrote many songs, including the national


anthems of India and Bangladesh.

Notable Compositions
"Jana Gana Mana": The Indian national anthem,
expressing patriotism and unity.
"Amar Shonar Bangla": The national anthem of
Bangladesh, celebrating the beauty of the land.

Tagore's songs often reflect themes of love, nature,


and spirituality.
Educational Reforms

Tagore founded Shantiniketan, a unique educational


institution, in 1901.

His vision was to create a holistic learning


environment that nurtured creativity, freedom, and
a close connection with nature.
