Lesson 3 Principles of Speech Writing and Delivery

Week 4
I. Introduction
Focus Question: “What makes a successful speech presentation?”
Just like any other endeavors, there are no shortcuts in public speaking. Thus, writing your speech is perhaps
the most crucial part that you may encounter because it requires inquiry and research. Once you have the
information, you will still need to organize this to make sure the content of your speech is coherent.
Keep in mind that a good speech starts with good writing.

II. Instruction
A. Read “Preparation for Public Speaking” on page 127-131 of your textbook. Note the importance
of the following principles.
 Audience –background and profile; size and number of listeners
 Purpose – inform, persuade, entertain, etc.
 Logical organization – chronological, causal, spatial, comparison & contrast, problem-solution
- transitional devices
- outlining
 Selecting a topic, sourcing information, drafting, and writing

B. Read “Preparation for Public Speaking” on page 156-159 of your textbook. Note the Cs of public
speaking.

The following are also important principles of effective speech deliver:


 Articulation – the speaker’s clarity and accuracy in pronunciation of each word; coherence of
ideas in presented in the speech
 Modulation – the changes in the tone or pitch throughout the speech presentation
 Stage Presence – one’s ability to command or engage the audience; physical appearance,
grooming,
credibility
 Facial Expressions, Gestures and Movements – nonverbal cues that play vital roles in capturing
the
audience’s interest
 Rapport with the audience – speaker’s connection with the audience
 Audiovisual aids – keeping audience’s attention, clarifying messages

Ponder on this: Which is more important, a well-written speech or a well-delivered one?
