ES 121 STATICS OF RIGID BODIES

COURSEWORK No. 5
Equilibrium of a Particle

Deadline: April 24, 2023, 4 PM

Instruction 1:
THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS MAY REQUIRE YOU TO USE YOUR STUDENT NUMBER.
PLEASE REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:
****-abcde
e.g.: Student Number 2021-00345 means a=0, b=0, c=3, d=4, e=5.
If the problem states that the length of the beam is 1abc mm, it means 1003 mm.

Additional Instruction 2:
● Round off your final answer to two-decimal places (e.g. 6543.12, 543.12, 43.12).
● For very small final answers, round off to at-least 4-significant figures (e.g. 1.234, 0.1234,
0.001234, 0.0001234)
● Kindly, box your answer

Additional Instruction 3:
● The coursework sheet template will be given to you, use the coursework sheet as your
solution sheet. Every problem will be written in one coursework sheet.

Note: Not following instruction will be deducted with 0.5 points in each item.

Problem 1:If the 1.d-m-long cord AB can withstand a maximum force of 3e00 N, determine the
force in cord BC and the distance y so that the 2c0-kg crate can be supported.

Problem 2: The members of a truss are connected to the gusset plate. If the forces are concurrent
at point O, determine the magnitudes of F and T for equilibrium.Take u = 30°.

Problem 3: If block D weighs 3e0 lb and block B weighs 2d5 lb, determine the required weight of
block C and the angle θ for equilibrium.

Problem 4: The unstretched length of spring AB is 3 m. If the block is held in the equilibrium
position shown, determine the mass of the block at D.

Problem 5: Determine the tension developed in each wire used to support the 5c-kg chandelier.

Problem 6: A “scale” is constructed with a 4-ft-long cord and the 1d-lb block D.The cord is fixed to
a pin at A and passes over two small pulleys at B and C. Determine the weight of the suspended
block at B if the system is in equilibrium.

Problem 7:The spring has a stiffness of k= 8ec N/m and an unstretched length of 2ce mm.
Determine the force in cables BC and BD when the spring is held in the position shown.
