Method of Statement – Grounding and Lightning AG

1. Introduction
This method of statement covers the on-site installation of Grounding and Lighting Protection as defined in the
Scope of work for Raven Electrical and Instrumentation Works Doc No: EG001-EN-SOW-11E-0004 and in
electrical specification Doc No:EG001-EL-SPE-0016 part. 8.8.

2. Scope of works
This procedure will define the method to be used to ensure that the Earthing and Lightning acceptable and shall
conform to the Contract Documents and Electrical Specification and scope of work of Raven Electrical and
Instrumentation Works. Subcontractor shall install the lightning protection/surge protection system for the
project as shown on the Layout and method of installation will be as show on standard installation drawing,
Contract Documents, IEC Recommendations and applicable Local and National Specifications. Except for the
Central Control Building and Substation Building which shall be installed by others. Temporary lightning
protection of equipment and structures shall be installed by others at the time of erection, and removed by
SUBCONTRACTOR after the permanent lightning protection has been installed as per Exhibit D at Part 3.6.7.

6. Inspection and Test Record

The CGE QC Inspector should verify the approved procedures are followed and the inspections and testing
records are completed as per the ITP Document No. EG001-QA-PLN-11Z-9006.

7. Installation Procedures
1. Ensure that the work area is ready and safe to start installation of Earthing and Lightning.
2. Ensure the installation of Earthing System and Lightning System are carried out in accordance with the
layout, standard installation drawings, Contract Documents, IEC Recommendations and applicable Local
and National Specifications.
3. Prior to start installation, refer to the layout and installation drawing related to the area of installation and
ensure that required materials are available at site as per approved material submittal.
4. Ensure the materials are stored properly and there is no mark of damage or deformity of any kind before
issuing the material from site store. All material and accessories should also free of dust, or oil.
5. Cable or conduit terminations at equipment shall be bonded to the equipment by means of an appropriate
Earthing tag or clip and suitable section of copper wire, strip or braid. When plastic enclosures are used
care must be taken to ensure that internal equipment is properly earthed to a suitable earth terminal in the
enclosure and that earth continuity is maintained between incoming and outgoing cables and/or conduits.
6. Protective conductor sizes installed shall not be less than those indicated in the contract drawings, relevant
Regulations, Codes of Practice.
7. Earthing electrodes shall be installed in accordance with the contract drawings so as not to exceed the
permitted maximum earth resistance when allowing for dry conditions, due to seasonal changes, fall in
water table levels, or corrosion.
8. Before start installation above Ground Earth Resistance shall be measured and recorded to conform that
it’s achieved the Earth Resistance Value as per project specifications.
9. Ladders, structures, platforms, vessels and associated pipe work shall be earthed for static electricity.
10. The network and branches, running above ground, shall be PVC covered cable as detailed, cables
terminated in a lug compressed to the conductor and secured to the boss provided.
11. Precautions shall be taken to prevent corrosion between any dissimilar metal joints (e.g. copper/
aluminium) due to electrolytic action in the presence of moisture.
12. All Earthing connection shall be made after cleaning the surface thoroughly and tightness checks for each
connection shall be peformed.
13. Test earth continuity from each item of equipment to the main earth system.
14. All cables, when glanded into clearance holes shall have their metal sheaths, or armouring effectively
earthed at both ends. The cable screen on H.V. multi-core cables shall also be earthed at both ends.
Earthing of the metallic layers (e.g. screen and armour) in HV single core cables shall be made with due
consideration of the bonding method (e.g. solid, single-point or cross-bonded) employed for the circuit.
15. Every earthing connection shall be liberally smeared, after completion, with “Chemodex” or equivalent
anti-corrosion grease supplied by the SUBCONTRACTOR. The grease selected shall be subject to the
CONTRACTOR’s approval before use.
16. Spare cores of glanded multi-core cables shall be collectively earthed via spare terminals within the
termination enclosure to prevent harmful induced voltages.
17. Instrumentation (i.e. “clean”) earthing systems (e.g. for control systems equipment, computer earth
ground, master reference earth ground, etc.) shall be insulated and connected to the plant earthgrounding
system at one point only as indicated on the drawings.

18. Where earth cables rise above grade (e.g. to reach equipment or earthing bars) cable shall be installed
within a “stub-up” of heavy gauge PVC conduit for mechanical protection at “kick” level, e.g. within
150mm from grade.
19. Earth wire installed through concrete shall be protected by a PVC sleeve.
20. Copper earth tape joints shall be made using compression type connectors for underground and above-
ground connections.

8. Handling
1. Cable handling shall be as per manufactor recommendation and to be matched with the Document
No. EG001-EL-MET-11Z-9008
2. All Accessories shall be handled and stored as per manufacture recommendation.

8. Progress Reporting
Subcontractor will submit daily with time sheets construction progress per the rules of credit. Set-route cards
will be utilized for tracking progress of commodities in Set-route (schedule raceway). For raceway not in Set-
route (unscheduled) Subcontractor to report on Contractor supplied template progress at the drawing level.
Progress to be entered by Subcontractor administrative staff into Contractor database daily and reported weekly.
