2. GENERAL

2.1 LOCATION

Fire and gas detectors shall be located in accordance with the protection area limitations of the
detector manufacturer.

The detector shall be installed in a location accessible for calibration and maintenance, but not
in frequently used access ways. Placement of detectors shall not interfere with process
equipment maintenance. Certain areas shall be avoided, such as sample stations where
nuisance alarms would negate the effectiveness of the detection system.

Sensors shall be located approximately 3 m from the expected emission point, and preferably
in the direction of ignition sources and/or populated areas.

Detectors shall be located close to potential sources of leakage such as a pump or compressor
seals, at 2 or 4 m to detect build-up of gas. Detectors shall be located at level lower than the
expected leak source.

2.2 PERFORMANCE

The principle of operation, quantity and location shall take into account, but not be limited to the
following:
• Flame detectors, HC gas detectors (Fixed and Open Path type), and Toxic Gas
Detectors (H2S) are considered for the protection of the existing risks in the area.
• The predominant combustible/flammable materials present and the type of fire which
may occur together with the possible presence of flammable gas.
• The ambient conditions and likely causes of impaired performance (air flows etc.)
• Dispersion behaviour of gases/smoke and possible beneficial locations for detectors
such as HVAC inlet ducts for early warning of possible gas/smoke ingress into enclosed
spaces.
• Possible failure modes, including risk of accidental damage and consequences of failure.
Also, the likelihood and consequences of false alarms.
• Maintenance access and required frequency and duration.
• Inspection, maintenance and test procedures.

Fire and Gas transmitters shall be used for safety sensing applications. Process sensing
switches shall not be used unless specifically approved by COMPANY prior to their specification.
Smart transmitters connected to FGS shall communicate via a 4-20 mA with HART analog
signal.

Fire and Gas detectors shall be EX d type suitable for location in Zone 2, hazardous area.
Vendor shall provide sufficient number of calibration kits for each type of detector supplied.
Detectors shall incorporate smart microprocessor calibration and fault diagnostic features.

The detecting unit included in the sensor head shall provide adequate sensitivity and the stability
necessary, under all conditions, to repeat any reading within 12 percent over the full-scale range.
Dedicated transmitters and sensing taps shall be used for each FGS application.

All FGS sensors, including each of any triplicated sensors in a 2oo3 voting initiator FGS or each
solenoid in a voting actuator FGS, can be viewed in DCS with direct link between both systems.
Package equipment signals that are used, as part of the FGS logic shall be hard wired to FGS.

Calibration shall be non-intrusive i.e calibration performed without opening the

sensor/transmitter enclosure such as by HART devices.

Gas detectors shall be calibrated at the vendor shop and site. The detector shall be calibrated
for the specific or predominant gas which is to be detected at the designated location.

Sensors shall be capable of direct calibration at the sensor head by one person. The selected
sensor shall allow calibration at the sensor head without the need to open the detector

3.4 OPEN PATH FLAMMABLE GAS DETECTORS

The main role of such instruments is to monitor the level of gas hazard in an area. Their
integrating method of measurement makes them more suited to indicate the presence of
explosion hazards than point devices that only measure local flammability.

The Open Path IR (line of sight) flammable gas detector will be installed to protect an area where
there are several potential leak sources; these areas must be free of any obstacle that may
obstruct the IR beam. The detector is activated by “cloud” of gas that cross the IR beam between
Source and Receiver.

Open path gas detectors are used to monitor the perimeter of process units.

Open path gas detectors have a (recommended) minimum alarm level setting of 0.5 LEL*m (50
% LEL extended for one meter). That is, it can be set to give an alarm if there is a flammable
gas cloud of 5 % LEL over a distance of 10 m or, 0.5 % LEL over a distance of 100 m.

Recommended alarm thresholds for open path (line-of-sight) gas detectors are:
• 1 LEL*m & 2.5 LEL*m respectively for Low/High level alarm;

The main characteristics of this device are:

• Detection principle: InfraRed absorption by hydrocarbon gases.

• Range of detection: 0 to 5 LEL.m
• Path Length: 5 to 200 meters.
• Accuracy: +/- 5% Full Scale (FS) Deflection
• Response time: T90% < 5 seconds.
• Operating temperature range: -40ºC to 60°C (ambient conditions); as the detectors will
be installed in full sun, they must withstand 85°C, if not possible they shall be fitted with
a sunshade.
• Operating humidity range: 0 to 100 % RH non-condensing.
• Protection Index: IP 66 for enclosures.
• Enclosure Material: SS 316
• Electrical protection: Zone 2, group IIC, Temperature class T3.
• Instrument type: Explosion Proof. Ex d
