Part 1. Complete Me!
Direction: Complete the crossword polynomial by finding the indicated products below.
Special Products
Lesson 6.1
Objectives:
• Identify polynomials which are special products through
pattern recognition
• Multiply Polynomials using the special product patterns
Polynomials with Common Monomial Fators

Polynomial Monomial Factor Special Product

3𝑥 + 5 6𝑥 + 10

2𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 1 12𝑥 3 − 24𝑥 2 + 6𝑥
Polynomials with Common Monomial Fators

Example:
Give the greatest monomial factor in the following polynomials.

1. 6x+18 2. 8𝑥 2 − 32𝑥 − 24 3. 13x-11y

Trinomials that are Squares of Binomials

When the binomial (a+b)2 , the special product is 𝑎2 + 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2 .

Solution:
i. (a+b)2 = (a+b) (a+b) ii. (a-b)2 = (a-b) (a-b)

The terms of the trinomial are related to the terms of the binomial in the following
manner:

i. The first term of the trinomial is the square of the first term of the binomial;
ii. The second term of the trinomial is equal to twice the product of the first and
second terms of the binomial; and
iii. The third term of the traditional is the square of the second term of the binomial
Trinomials that are Squares of Binomials

Example:
1. (x+9)2 2. (2x+3)2
Trinomials that are Squares of Binomials

Tell if the given expression is a perfect square trinomial.

Example:

1. 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 9 2. 𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 − 25 3. 4𝑥 2 + 28xy + 49𝑦 2

Product of Two Binomials

When the binomials (a+b) (c+d) are multiplied, the special product is ac + ad + bc + bd.

1. (x+3) (𝑥 + 5) 2. 𝑥 − 4 (3𝑥 + 2) 3. (2x-3)(3x-5)

In-Class Assignment
Tell whether each polynomial is a special product or not.

1. 4𝑥 2 − 16𝑥𝑦

2. 4𝑞 2 − 16𝑞 + 16

3. 9𝑧 2 + 12𝑧𝑘 + 4𝑘 2
Products of a Sum and a Difference of Two Terms

When the binomials (a+b) (a-b) are multiplied, the special product is a 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2 .

Solution:
(a+b) (a-b) =

Example:

1. (x+6) (x-6) 2. (2x+3) (2x-3)

Products of a Sum and a Difference of Two Terms

Example:

Identify if the following polynomials is a special product.

1. 𝑥 2 − 36 2. 64𝑦 2 − 100
Product of a Binomial and a Trinomial Resulting
in a Sum or Difference of Two Cubes

Observe the product when the binomial (x + 𝑦) and the trinomial (𝑥 2 − 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 ) are
multiplied.
Solution:
(x + 𝑦) (𝑥 2 − 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 )

Similarly, when the binomial (x − 𝑦) and the trinomial (𝑥 2 + 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 ) are multiplied, the
product is:
Solution:
(x − 𝑦) (𝑥 2 + 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 )
Product of a Binomial and a Trinomial Resulting
in a Sum or Difference of Two Cubes

To check if the product of the binomial and a trinomial constitute a special product,
take note of the following conditions:
i. The first term of the trinomial is the square of the first term of the binomial;
ii. The second term of the trinomial is the product of the first and second terms of the
binomial;
iii. The sign of the second term of the trinomial is the opposite of the sign of the second
term of the binomial; and
iv. The third term of the trinomial is the square of the second term of the binomial.

1. (x + 3) (𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 9) 2. (4m − 5𝑛) (16𝑚2 + 20𝑚𝑛 + 25𝑛2 )

Product of a Binomial and a Trinomial Resulting
in a Sum or Difference of Two Cubes

Which of the following will yield a special product?

1. (x + 3) (𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 9)

2. (𝑦 − 2) (𝑦 2 + 2𝑦 + 4)

3. (3x − 4𝑦) (9𝑥 2 + 12𝑥𝑦 + 16𝑦 2 )

In-Class Assignment
I. Identify if the following expressions will yield a special product.

1. (3x 2 −2y 2 ) (3x 2 +2y 2 )

2. (𝑥 −4) (𝑥 2 +4x+16 )
3. (2𝑥 −3) (4𝑥 2 −6x+9 )

II. What should be multiplied to the given terms to get the sum or
difference of two cubes? Then, give the product.

1. (𝑥 −7) (_ _ _)
2. (4𝑥 +1) (_ _ _)
