A.DAILY ROUTINE
• Greetings
Good morning class!
Good morning ma’am! Good morning,
classmate!

groups).
• Keeping the Room in Order
Good Morning Class!
Good morning

-Class, before you take your seats, please see

those pieces of papers and plastics under your (The students arrange their chairs)
chair, pick those up and arrange your chair Thank you, Ma’am
properly in 1,2,3,4,5…..10

• Checking of Attendance

Is there any absent today?

None, Ma’am
Very good! I hope you can maintain perfect
attendance until the end of the school year.

B. MOTIVATION
Class I have here a jar containing different
kind of situation that your group need to
answer correctly. (The teacher will show the
jar to the students and will explain the
mechanics of the game)

Are you ready?

Yes, Ma’am.
What have you notice on our activity?

In this activity we are given a chance to know,

Right! how many arrangements a thing can have.

• Presentation of Objectives
Our activity has something to do with our
lesson today but before we proceed to our
lesson, let us all first get our learning
objectives. Please read the following learning
objectives right in front of you. (The teacher
will call someone to read the learning
objectives)
(The student will read the objectives)

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, 75% of the students

will be able to:
• define permutations of the distinct
objects
• derive the formula for finding the
number of permutations of n objects
taken r at a time, n ≥ r; and
• solve real life problems involving
C.LESSON PROPER permutation
• Activity
Suppose you secure your new phone using a
password. Later, you realized that you forgot
the 3-digit code. You only remember that the
code contains the digits 1,7 and 3. How many
possible arrangements are there in 3-digit in
order for you to find the exact code of your
phone?

What are the arrangement of code that you’ve

tried?

Okay, very good! So including the 1st possible

codes (1,7,3) and the exact code (3,1,7), how 1 3 7 731 371 317 713

many possible arrangements of the 3 digits

have?
There are 6 possible arrangements of the
digits 1,7,3.
That’s right!

How about if there were 8 digits in a code like

your laptop password, can you tell how many
possible arrangements of your password?
Yes, Ma’am. We can tell how many possible
arrangements our password would have but, I
think it will take a little longer to count all the
possible arrangements.

Exactly!

Now class, there is a term in mathematics that

refers to the possible arrangements of things or
object. And that is PERMUTATION!

(The teacher will play the video about (The student will watch the video)
permutation)

Now, that you are done watching the video.

What have you notice? There are different real life situation that can
involve permutation and there are formula to
solve permutation easily.
Exactly!
The permutation of n objects taken r at a time
𝑛!
is: 𝑃(𝑛, 𝑟) = (𝑛−𝑟)! , 𝑛 ≥ 𝑟
And the permutation of n objects taken all at a
time is:𝑃(𝑛, 𝑛) = 𝑛!

Now, how can we apply permutation in a horse

race? Here are the situation.
MINDORO STATE UNIVERSITY

COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

There are 8 horses in a race. If all we are

concerned with are the first, second, third, and
places finishers (the trifecta), how many
different orders of finish are possible?

Using the formula for n object taken r at a time

here are the solution:
𝑛!
𝑃(𝑛, 𝑟) =
(𝑛 − 𝑟)!
8!
𝑃(8,3) =
(8 − 3)!
8𝑥7𝑥6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
= 5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
40,320
=
120
= 336
Did you understand?

Now, who can solve this problem. Yes, ma’am.

(The teacher will give the problem to the
students and call someone)

(The student will solve the given problem)

Okay, very good!
Now, let’s solve another problem and this time
permutation of n objects taken all at a time.

Here are the example:

In how may ways can Aling rosing arrange 6
different potted plants in a row?

Here are the solution:

𝑃(𝑛, 𝑛) = 𝑛!
𝑃(6,6) = 6!
= 6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
= 720 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠

Did you understand?

Now, student 1 can solve this another Yes, ma’am.

problem?

Yes, ma’am.
In how many ways can 5 people arrange
themselves in a row for picture taking?

𝑃(𝑛, 𝑛) = 𝑛!
𝑃(5,5) = 5!
= 5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
Excellent! It seems that you really know how = 120 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠
to solve permutation.

b. Analysis
Again, what formula are we going to use in
finding the permutation of n object taken all at
time.

𝑃(𝑛. 𝑛) = 𝑛!
Okay, good!
How about when we are going to solve for the
permutation of n objects taken r at time?

𝑛!
𝑃(𝑛, 𝑟) =
Very good! (𝑛 − 𝑟)!

Now, try to solve this.

Problem 1: Given the four-letter word READ,
in how many ways can we arrange its letter, 3
at a time?
𝑃(𝑛, 𝑛) = 𝑛!
𝑃(4,4) = 4!
= 4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
= 24 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠

Problem 2: Ten runners join the race. In how

many possible ways can they be arranged as
first, second and third place? 𝑛!
𝑃(𝑛, 𝑟) =
(𝑛 − 𝑟)!
10!
𝑃(10,3) =
(10 − 3)!
10!
𝑃(10,3) = 7!
3,628,800
𝑃(10,3) = 5040
𝑃(10,3) = 720 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠

c. Abstraction
Before we proceed to the activity let’s have a
short review.

1. How are you going to calculate the different

permutations of distinct objects? By using the formula for the permutation of n
objects taken r at a time is: 𝑃(𝑛, 𝑟) =
𝑛!
(𝑛−𝑟)!
,𝑛 ≥ 𝑟 𝑎nd the permutation of n objects
taken all at a time is:𝑃(𝑛, 𝑛) = 𝑛!

Very good!
2. What is permutation. A permutation is an arrangement of all or set
of objects or numbers.

Excellent!

d. Application
Try to answer the following problems.

Problems:
• Suppose that in a certain association, there are
12 elected members of the Board of Directors.
In how many ways can a president, a vice

president, a secretary, and a treasurer be

selected from the board?
• A dress shop owner has 8 new dresses that she
wants to display in the window. If the window
has 5 mannequins, in how many ways can she
dress them up?
• There are ten candidates for a job. The search
committee will choose four of them and rank
the chosen four from strongest to weakest.
How many different outcomes are possible?

e. Evaluation
Direction: identify and solve the following
item.
1.What is the term that refers to the possible
arrangement of things?
2.What is the formula used in getting the
permutation of an object taken r at a time.
3. Find the permutation of the 6=letter word
PLANTS taking 4 at a time.
4.Ana received 7 paintings from his boss as a
reward of her good work. She wants to hang it
on her wall horizontally. In how many possible
ways can he arrange it all? (Show your
solution)
5.Lina bought a book from each of the 6
different genres. When she got home, she
found out that there is only space for 5 books.
In how many possible ways can she arrange
them to fit all the 6 books. (Show your
solution)
F. Assignment
Think about the different situation that involve
arrangements and give your own example of
permutation and try to solve it. (At least 5)
