Activity 1: Piping Systems

Instruction:

1. What role do piping systems play in the transportation of fluids in industrial

settings, and how do they differ based on the type of fluid being transported?

Ans: Visualize a large factory producing a wide range of goods. Now consider how these items
are made using various types of liquids and gasses. Similar to how water moves through pipes in
your home, piping systems are like the underground passageways that transport these liquids and
gasses around the facility. To ensure that nothing leaks out and no one gets wounded, these
tunnels, or pipes, must be sturdy and secure. Additionally, they must be made in a way that
minimizes energy loss and facilitates the simple passage of gases and liquids through them. In
other words, pipe systems function as the unseen roads that supply the factory with all the
supplies it requires to run efficiently.

2. Can you discuss the importance of material selection in designing piping

systems for industrial applications, particularly in terms of factors like
pressure, temperature, and corrosion resistance?

Ans: Designing the pipping system like you are solving the puzzle. You have to pick the right pieces
Depending on what they are moving and what sort of things they are moving, they have to build the pipe
systems differently. They need pipes that can withstand the heat without melting if they’re moving something
really hot, and they need pipes that won’t break if they’re moving anything really corrosive that may eat away
at the pipes. Through meticulous consideration of pressure, temperature, and corrosion resistance during the
design process, engineers can guarantee the dependability, security, and effectiveness of industrial processes.
To maximize system performance and reduce hazards, this entails making the right material selections,
accurately sizing components, and putting into practice suitable installation and maintenance procedures.

3. How do piping systems contribute to the efficiency and safety of industrial

processes, and what are some common challenges faced in the design and
maintenance of these systems?

Ans: A similar comparison can be made with a city’s roadways, pipping networks, which transmit liquids
to the required areas, enabling them to communicate with one another of the manufacturing components.
Piping network designs allow fluids to flow around a plant efficiently and safely. These are the common
challenges faced in the design and maintenance of these system: Compatibility Pressure and
Temperature, Corrosion and Erosion, Contamination, Maintenance, Expansion and Flexibility, Safety
and Cost

Piping Design Engineering- Major Challenges & Solution (rishabheng.com)

Explanation:
It is crucial to select the appropriate pipe when designing the pipping system because there are various factors
to take into account, such as industry pressure changes. Additionally, the pipes must be compatible with the
fluids that pass through them. For instance, if the contents of the tank contain chemicals, the pipe that is
installed must be compatible with fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) because it is resistant to corrosion and
will prevent pipe damage. Maintenance issues stemming from aging, occasionally damaged pipelines or
incompatible water that causes corrosion, erosion, and contamination are another common concern. It is also
necessary to maintain the pipes so that the safety of each worker can be ensured
