THE ROHINGNYA
The Rohingya, a Muslim minority
group from Myanmar, have been
making headlines due to their
plight and mass migration to
neighboring countries. While
their situation is undoubtedly
dire, it is essential to examine the
concerns and apprehensions of
those who are skeptical about
providing them with asylum. This
article aims to shed light on the
other side of the Rohingya issue,
backed by reliable sources.

The 1951 Convention relating
to the Status of Refugees is a
United Nations treaty that
defines who is a refugee,
outlines the rights of
refugees, and establishes the
legal obligations of states to
protect them. However,
Indonesia is not a signatory to
this convention, which means
that it is not legally bound to
follow its guidelines regarding
the treatment of refugees.
With the influx of Rohingya into
Indonesia, there are many things
that Indonesian people are afraid
of, for example, there is concern
that the arrival of Rohingya
refugees could increase the
economic and social burden in
Indonesia. In fact, spending on
Rohingya reaches 100
million/month.

In the opinion of the
Acehnese, Rohingya
refugees very often violate
the rules that apply in
society, even though they
have been given refugee
camps, many refugees still
often run away and
commit trouble with
criminal acts.

This conflict has given rise to various
opinions. Several parties have urged
cooperation between countries to
help Myanmar in its democratic
transition, build mechanisms for
providing economic and
humanitarian assistance, and build
trust between communities and
dialogue between religions. However,
there is also an opinion that
neighboring countries, including
Indonesia, must be careful in
accepting Rohingya refugees,
considering the limited resources and
socio-economic impacts that may
arise.
