Practice Paper - Specific Questions

Subject: Science Std: IX

Chapter 1: Matter in Our Surroundings

General Instructions:
1. The Practice Paper comprises subjective short and long answer type questions.
2. Attempt all questions.

1. Two statements are given- one labeled Assertion (A) and the other labeled
Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions from the codes (a),
(b), (c) and (d) as given below:
(a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of the assertion.
(b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the
assertion.
(c) A is true, but R is false.
(d) A is false, but R is true.
(a) Assertion: Solids may break under force, but it’s difficult to change their
shape.
Reason: Solids have negligible compressibility.

(b) Assertion: Diluted solution of potassium permanganate shows lighter colour

than the original solution of potassium permanganate.
Reason: The diluted solution has lesser number of potassium permanganate
crystals than the original solution.

(c) Assertion: The palm feels cool when acetone falls on it.
Reason: The particles on palm loose energy and get cooler.

2. Water as ice has a cooling effect whereas water as steam may cause severe
burns. Explain these observations.

3. 100 ml of water was placed in four vessels A, B, C, D. Vessel A, C and D are of

the same size while vessel B is smaller. Vessel C is covered while vessel C and
D are placed under the fan. Study the diagram and answer the following
