CHAPTER 3: REVIEW RELATELITERATURE

3.1 Students encounter various challenges during the transition from junior high
to senior high school.
1 Resilience and Personal Growth

RRL

Resilience and personal growth are crucial for individuals to adapt and thrive in the
face of adversity. Research underscores the importance of understanding the factors
contributing to resilience and personal growth (Iacoviello & Charney, 2014). Resilience is a
multidimensional concept influenced by factors such as the severity and chronicity of
adversity, ecological influences, attributions of causality, and cultural relevance (Ungar,
2014). It is not solely an individual trait but a dynamic process involving multiple systems
and perspectives, offering avenues to enhance mental health and positive development,
particularly in individuals at risk for psychopathology (Masten et al., 2021).

2. ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENT

RRL

Academically there are major adjustments that must be made as evidenced by

research on the difficulties junior high and senior high school students encounter. Eccles &
Co. (2015) shed light on how adolescents school experiences are impacted by stage-
environment fit exposing challenges in adjusting to new subjects and the elevated
expectations for academic performance. Trusty (2015) highlights the challenges of adapting
to curriculum modifications such as unanticipated shifts in subjects and strands while
Schneider et al. (2012) highlight the belief among students that more work and time
management are necessary for senior high school. Taken as a whole these studies highlight
the necessity of further research and study to meet the rigorous academic requirements of
senior high school pointing to the need for a comprehensive strategy to assist students
during this transitional period.

3. TIME MANAGEMENT
RRL
Time management is a crucial skill that impacts various aspects of life, including
academic success, job performance, and effective delegation. Research has shown that
effective time management is associated with greater academic performance and lower
levels of anxiety in students (Adams & Blair, 2019)

4. SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT

RRL

The strategies used for socialization and the unique contexts within which families
operate play crucial roles in shaping individuals’ social adjustment (Umaña‐Taylor & Hill,
2020).

3.2 Students employ coping strategies to address the challenges they encounter
as senior high school students.
1. STRATEGIES FOR COPING

RRL

Coping strategies have been examined in relation to specific stressors, such as

occupational stress among nurses, educational stress in adolescents, and stress experienced
by individuals in the gig economy (Dimunová et al., 2020; Kaushal et al., 2018; Hafeez et
al., 2022). Understanding the coping mechanisms employed by these groups is crucial for
developing tailored interventions to support their mental well-being effectively. Studies have
further explored the relationship between coping strategies and psychological outcomes,
such as anxiety in breast cancer survivors and burnout among mental health practitioners
(Noureen et al., 2019). Identifying effective coping strategies is vital for mitigating negative
psychological consequences and enhancing overall quality of life

2. IMPORTANCE OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT

RRL

Academic support is a critical factor in students’ educational journeys, influencing

various aspects of their academic performance and well-being. Research has demonstrated
that students’ perceptions of academic support from different sources, including family,
friends, teachers, and peers, significantly impact their academic outcomes (Marley & Wilcox,
2021; Abdullah et al., 2014; Guthrie & Fruiht, 2018). For example, family and peer academic
social supports have been shown to be predictors of academic motivation and achievement
among first-year college students (Marley & Wilcox, 2021).

3.3 Recommendations can be proposed to address the challenges faced by

students who have transitioned from junior high to senior high school.
1. MOTIVATION AND CONFIDENCE BUILDING

RRL

For instance, in the context of language learning, strategies that promote autonomy and
perceived competence have been linked to increased motivation and engagement (Noels et
al., 2003). Similarly, in the educational setting, providing rewards has been identified as an
effective method to boost self-confidence (Latifah & Ichsan, 2023)

2. SCHOOL STRATEGIES

RRL

Strategic planning is also essential in areas like physical education and sports in schools.
Studies emphasize the need for designing strategies aligned with national guidelines to
ensure the achievement of desired targets, especially in the context of limited resources
(Rahim et al., 2021).

3. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND PEER SUPPORT

RRL

In the field of mental health, integrating peer-to-peer interactions into digital

interventions for psychotic disorders has demonstrated potential benefits in enhancing
engagement and social interaction among participants (Biagianti et al., 2018). Similarly,
employing peer recovery coaches to interact with individuals who have survived opioid
overdoses and linking them to suitable support services has been identified as a promising
strategy in post-overdose response programs (Dahlem et al., 2021).
