Data Science Training

Prof. Jaap Velthuis

Data intensive research
u Data analysis skills are used in many fields in research
• Too many to list
u Same approaches used in many industry applications
• Predicting share prices
• Insurance estimates
• Predictive maintenance
• Evaluating stock and buying new components
• ….
u Government applications
• Which factors are most important for successful policy.

2
Data intensive research
u There are (too) many data science techniques to present them all.
u We will teach you
• Basic Python analysis
• Critical analysis of histograms and related statistics
• Data processing techniques
• …
• Machine learning
u Key aim is to learn the basic skills to enable you to master the
advanced ones yourself.
• We will provide training and guidance for advanced methods
u In the time available, you will learn a lot, but not (necessarily)
become an expert.

3
Data Science Training
u This course is for everyone who works with numbers
• We assume a knowledge level equivalent to starting undergraduate
level in STEM subject
u We will teach you principles and a tool to do data science yourself
• Tool is technical
• Principles for everyone
• Applications for everyone

4
Data Science Training
u Start with very basic skills
• We assume no knowledge of Python, very little knowledge of
statistics
u Aim to finish at a high level
• Multivariate analysis
• Deep learning
• Machine learning
•…
u Apply skills to real industry-inspired challenges

u Please note that we will be guided by you.

• Speed and end level set with you in mind.
• We expect a very mixed audience, so we will offer basic material
and direct towards advanced material.

5
Sessions
u Weekly Teaching sessions
• Up to two hours max. Aim for just over 1 hour.
• Wednesdays. Start 20:30pm AET.
• Recordings will be made available 1 week in advance. Please go
through the material BEFORE the lecture.
• Jupyter notebooks with and without solutions will be shared with you.
• Sessions will be recorded and shared with you.

u Weekly Application sessions

• Sessions will be recorded and shared with you.

u Questions/remarks/suggestions: Please email bristoldst@gmail.com

• Includes questions on the material
• Solutions
• Help to do exercises

6
Application lectures
u Lectures from people in industry and academia.
u Aims
• Show you how knowledge can be used in practice
• Give ideas and inspiration
• Introduce you to new concepts

u Topics might not always align directly with the Somali situation, but
that is not the point.

7
Certificates
u We will issue 2 types of certificates
• Standard
• Advanced

u We will give you two assignments in the coming weeks.

• Successful completion of the basic assignment qualifies you for a
Standard certificate
• Successful completion of the basic AND the advanced assignment
qualifies you for an Advanced certificate

8
Assignment rules
u You will be provided with a few options for each assignment.
u You will have around two weeks:
• Deadlines are hard deadlines at 19:00 UK times. No extensions, not
19:02,…
u Details to follow.
u It is a pass/fail only.

9
Communication
u Please ask questions during the lectures.
• Use chat function
• Can ask questions in English and Somali
• Transparency Solutions will provide translation

u During lectures, remain muted. Use the chat function unless we ask
you to speak.

u Can email bristoldst@gmail.com

• We will use this address to contact you
• Please include your local focal point
