INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Write your name in the spaces provided on the answer sheet/answer booklet.
Answer 𝒂𝒍𝒍 questions.
If a numerical answer cannot be given exactly, and the accuracy required is not specified in the
question, then in the case of an angle it should be given correct to the nearest degree, and in other
cases it should be given to 2 significant figures.
INFORMATION TO CANDIDATES
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part of question.
You are reminded of the need for clear presentation in your answers.

1.
(a) Cathy made observation of the maximum temperature 𝑡°𝐶, 50 days. Her results
2
are summarized by ∑ 𝑡 = 910 and ∑(𝑡 − 𝑡̅) = 876, where 𝑡̅ denotes the mean of
50 observation. Calculate 𝑡̅ and the standard deviation of the observations. [3]
(b) The weights in grams of a number of stones, measured correct to the nearest
gram, are presented in the following table.
Weight (grams)
1-10 11-20 21-25 26-30 31-50 51-70
Frequency 2𝑥 4𝑥 3𝑥 5𝑥 4𝑥 𝑥
A histogram is drawn with a scale of 1cm to represent 1 unit on the vertical axis
which represents frequency density. The 1-10 rectangle has 3cm,
(i) Calculate the value of 𝑥 and the height of the 51-70 rectangle. [3]
(ii) Calculate an estimate of the mean of stones. [2]

2. If 𝑃( 𝐴 ∣ 𝐵 ) = 5 , 𝑃(𝐵) = 4 , 𝑃(𝐴) = 3, find
a) 𝑃( 𝐵 ∣ 𝐴 ) [3]
b) 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) [2]
3. A group of 100 people, 40 own a cat, 25 own a dog and 15 own a cat and a dog. Find
the probability that a person chosen at random
a) owns a dog or a cat, [2]
b) owns a dog or a cat, but not both, [2]
c) owns a dog, given that he owns a cat, [3]
d) does not a cat, given that he owns a dog. [3]
4. How many 3-letter cord words can be formed from the letters of the word
“CELERON”,
5. For a certain strain of flower, the probability that, when sown, a seed produces a
1
plant with yellow flowers is 6. Find the minimum number of seeds that should be
sown in order that the probability of obtaining at least one plant with yellow flowers
is greater than 0.98. [4]
6.
(a) The probability density function of a discrete random variable X is given by
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥) = 𝑘𝑥 for 𝑥 = 12, 13, 14.
Write out the probability distribution and find the value of 𝑘. [3]
(b) The discrete random variable X can take values 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10. Given that 𝑝3 =
0.1, 𝑝5 = 0.05, 𝑝6 = 0.45 and 𝑝8 = 3𝑝, calculate 𝑝10. [4]
8. The continuous random variable X has a probability density function given by,
1 −𝑘𝑥
𝑓(𝑥) = {3 𝑒 𝑥>0
0 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
where 𝑘 is a constant.
1
(a) Show that 𝑘 = 3 [2]
(b) Find,
(i) the cumulative distribution of X, [3]
(ii) 𝑄1 , 𝑄2 and 𝑄3. [6]
9.
(a) In a normal distribution 69% if the distribution is less than 28, and 90% is less
than 35. Find the mean and standard deviation of the distribution. [6]
(b) On a production line making 60 calculators, the probability of any calculator
being faulty is 0.003. Use a suitable approximation to find the probability that
there are at least 3 calculators faulty. [5]
10.
(a) Define systematic sampling and stratified sampling. [2]
(b) Give comparisons between a population census and sample survey. [3]
(c) During a particular evening, 10 babies were born on a particular maternity
ward in a large hospital. The lengths, in centimeters, of the babies were noted
50, 51, 45, 47, 49, 48, 54, 53, 45, 50.
Assuming that the sample came from an underlying normal population,
calculate 95% confidence interval for the mean of the population. [4]

13. The masses of avocados from a particular tree are normally distributed with mean
0.8kg and variance 0.01. Pawpaws from a certain tree have masses which are
normally distributed with mean 1.2 kg and variance 0.04.
a) Find the probability that a randomly chosen avocado weighs less than half
the mass of a pawpaw. [4]
b) Avocados are sold at $1.50 per kg and pawpaws at $0.50 per kg. Find the
probability that the total cost of 5 randomly avocados and 3 randomly
chosen pawpaws is more than $8.00. [5]
14.
(a) The continuous random variable X is uniformly distributed in the interval [𝑎, 𝑏],
where 𝑏 > 𝑎. Given that 𝑃(𝑋 < 4) = 0.6 and 𝑃(𝑋 < 5.6) = 0.95. Find the values
